4Very nice fixed base unit, OK plunge base unit
By A Customer
I bought this set mostly for use in a Bench Dog RT150 router table with the fixed base. Wanted the GripVac base for occasional "out of the box" use where the vac feature would be nice. The fixed base/motor work REALLY well in the RT150. The motor release and height adjust controls are very accessable through the cabinet door and the accessory top-side height adjust knob, though a free mail-in item, is not really needed. The only things you have to reach for are the speed control (easy), on/off (easy), and the collet lock (less easy, but tolerable). The motor is very quiet, the soft-start "way cool", and power more than adequate. The clear plastic sub-bases ae less impressive. Seem like polystyrene, but I hope they are something more durable that that. I am less impressed with the plunge base. It's OK, but compared to my P-C 7529 plunge router, it's pretty crude in features, but then it only added $30 to the cost of the fixed-base router and $6 of that is for the plastic base that can take guide bushings. Too cheap to pass up. An annoying thing about the plunge base is that it has a 1" dust port, but the location makes it very inconvenient/impossable to use with P-C's 1" dust hose. Somebody stopped thinking too soon in the design stage. No fine plunge adjust, either. I give the GripVac base 5 stars and the plunge base three, so an average of four. Overall, a very good product and worth the money. Sure wish P-C was less stingy about warranty. Milwaukee does "lifetime", why does P-C only do 1 year? By the way, the CD they give you with the kit includes a video of instructions on building a simple router table. Unfortunately, the audio periodically fails. Not a big thing, but it does make P-C look bad to ship such a thing. I think they need a little Demming influence there.

5Great going, Porter-Cable!
By Jeffery D. Oliver
I recently bought this router to supplement my Milwaukee 3.5HP table router. I have, thus far, been nothing but impressed by this new offering from P-C. It is, by far, one of the quietest routers I have yet to use (other than the original Elu I used in Europe). The dust collection system is functional, the multi-point accessible power switch is a great innovation, and the general feeling of solid quality is P-C at its best! If I had any complaint, it would not be against P-C - it would be that you really should peruse the manual first - I didn't notice the additional switch access until later (who uses manuals anyway, until they have a problem with a product).

4Deficiencies
By Paul Cardinale
Overall, it's a fine system, and I'm glad I bought it.However there are some astonishing design blunders:1. On some of the plunge bases, the depth indicator is made of translucent plastic instead of transparent. This makes it impossible to read the depth indicator.2. The spindle lock actuator on the plunge base is completely disfunctional. The motor unit cannot be brought down far enough to engage it.3. With the dust shield in place, it's impossible to make above-the-table bit changes. Worse yet, with large bits, the entire unit must be removed from the table to change bits. Without the dust shield, above-the-table bit changes are quite easy; but you get a lot of dust sprayed around.

1a waste of $250, buy a 690 series instead
By J. Mangers
I've been using PC products for 16 years and have loved every one of them until now. My last router was getting a little tired so I thought I would upgrade from a 690 to the new 893 and am appalled that PC put this unit on the market, it is a total waste of money. Here's what it comes down to: the motor itself is great, lots of power, smooth starting, and much quieter than the 690's, this is where the good review ends. The main problem I've found is that the bases are very poorly designed and constructed. It seems like PC was trying to add a bunch of new feautres to them and ended up sacrificing quality for nifty gadgetry. The new clear plastic base does not glide well over most of the woods that I use, instead it chatters causing rough choppy cuts. I tried waxing it, cleaning it with alcohol and even sanded it with 1200 grit paper and nothing seems to help with this problem. The bases are made from a very thin metal and do not seem like they will hold up well to the rigors of long term use. The plunge base has many problems including: depth adjustment/stop moves/comes out of adjustment when doing several of the same depth cuts in a row, the release lever seems to be desinged in a couter intuitive way and does not release in a consistent manner. The main guides that control up/down movement do not opperate smoothly and it's hard to tell if you've reached the stop or are just hung up in a sticky spot. I took this apart, cleaned it out and waxed everything and this did not solve the issue. The view on the measuring gauge is obscured by the tensioning knob for the gauge. All and all I thought these new features would work welland was looking forward to the next generation of PC routers and what I found is that if this is it, Porter Cable has sunk to or below the level of Ryobi. I see there are several good reviews here and not much critisism, do yourself a favor and look at the reviews for the PC 895PK before buying this router, it is the same unit with an added feature or two. Alas do not be too discouraged by this, the 690 series are still great products, what I would consider to be the industy standard, buy one of these instead and you'll get many years of trouble free use from it. Oh I almost forgot, I contacted PC customer support to see if there was any way to exchange this for a 690, they were unwilling to do anything and were not even the least bit apologetic about the issues I am having.Cheers!J.

5Actually Designed With the User in Mind
By Ronald W. Owens
I needed a router with a bit more Horsepower - my old 1-1/2HP machine was just getting worked too hard. I should mention that I already owned 3 routers - 2 at 1-1/2 HP, and a small "trimmer" type that I use a lot - more as a router than as a trimmer.I used one of the old routers in my router table, with an accessory variable speed control. I had already decided that a plunge base was in my future, because there were just times when nothing else was a better option. I decided to order the new Porter Cable 893PK, which, at 2-1/4 HP was a significant boost in horsepower. It included the plunge base at a better price than buying things separately. It has electronic variable speed, and a "soft start" feature that is wonderful - very little torque at start up. I was amazed at how much more quiet this machine is, than my old ones. Motors and mechanical things rotating at more than 20,000 rpm's tend to generate high frequency noise. Porter Cable has done a great job of minimizing the noise - the usual high pitched whine is gone.I mounted the fixed base to my router table and keep the plunge base for other jobs. Of course, I still own all the other routers, so there are options aplenty.I cannot say enough good things about the design of this tool. The depth adjustment in the fixed base is just fabulous - you just move the lever and make large or coarse adjustments. Fine adjustments are precise, quick and easy, and can be easily reached under my router table. Both the fixed and plunge bases lock or release instantly with the movement of a finger. The variable speed is smooth and maintains the power, even at the slower speeds. In fact, you need to carefully listen and look at the cut when using larger bits - the electronic control keeps a constant speed, so when you begin to really "work" this tool, it is not easy to tell - no telltale slowing down as in the past, just an instinctive feel that you are stressing the tool.It has a spindle lock, so only one wrench is needed. The clever collet design eliminates the old "sticking" issues - you simply loosen the nut and the bit and collet comes away easily. I cannot think of a single thing that I would offer as an improvement to this design. Five stars might not be enough.Ron Owens

1plunge base is poorly constructed
By Thomas
I purchased this router to replace a 15 year old Black and Decker Quantum plunge base router. I thought I was purchasing a high quality router that would serve me well for another 15 years. But I find this product unusable as a plunge router. The plunge movement grabs and sticks so much that depth adjustments are impossible to predict. The worst issue is the excessive play between the router bit and the base - 0.024". Try routing with a 0.125" router bit with 0.024" side play.

5outstanding in & out of the table
By Sharon
This is the "perfect fit" for router table use. I can't comment on hand-held use because it immediately went into the router table. This machine is smooth cutting, powerful and quiet. The features for the table mount are perfect. PC put a lot of thought into this one! You can adjust the bit height using the 75301 height adjustment knob, lock/unlock the motor from the mount and lock the spindle all from above. The spindle/collet raises enough that you don't have to reach down inside the mount to get to the collet nut. My only gripe was that the height adjustment knob is an accessory costing an extra twenty to thirty bucks depending on where you find it. Amazon doesn't carry it yet but a web search will turn up a bunch of sites that do. I thought I'd save a few bucks and just use a 1/4 drive 3/16" socket and extension bar but none of the sockets I have found will fit through the hole in the base. The knob from PC has a second, located lower, plastic guide that helps to align the knob shaft with the height adjuster mounted on the base. I guess the best bet is to spend a few more bucks and get the PC version. This unit comes with an interactive cd that is very well done. Even has plans and a short movie from the router workshop on building a table. Very well done I might add.All in all I would give it six stars if I could. This is an up-date to a reveiw I posted in 2003 the same week I got this router. Well the good news is after 3 years of regular use I would still give this router 6 stars if I could. I figure I saved major money over buying a "router lift" type of accessorie because this router does all of that and does it well. The not-so-good-news is the router was recalled. I called my service center and drove over to be presented with a brand new router motor. Yes I am well out of warranty but they gave me the brand new motor, no questions asked! I don't think I could ask for more. I have since purchased the vac. handle kit and can rave over the performance of that item too. Once again, six stars if they would let me! I've never had one moment of dissatsifaction. I have had to make a few minor adjustments over the years but performance has never really suffered. Give this one a good look. I know you won't be disappointed. I sure haven't been!

3Close but no Cigar
By Robert Noe
I have several Porter Cable routers along with an ELU. When this router is mounted under a table, it is wonderful that it will lift to a height where changing bits is a breeze. Also, the router has plenty of power when using large raised panel bits. Now for the bad. Porter Cable used a plastic gear system on the side of the router for the raising and lowering mechanism. When using the height adjusting feature, the gears are too course which doesn't allow for accurate fine adjustment. Also the adjustment is sloppy at best, the router tilts in its base, especially when a little sawdust falls into the adjusting mechanism. I actually have to reach under the table and pull the router vertical to insure accurate height adjustment. While the router motor is fine, there are better systems for mounting a router beneath the table. This router makes me thankful for Ebay.

5Powerful, quiet, a snap to set up
By A Customer
I have never been more impressed with a power tool. I can make bit adjustments or changes in seconds accurately with the adjustment knob through the base. There i splenty of power in this baby too. I cut 2 3/8" molding in a single pass. Perhaps the best feature is the heavy insulation around the motor. This router is quieter than a blender. If you own a table and are looking for a replacement router or a better router, I can't begin to tell you how satisfied you will be with this product.

5This is one sweet router
By M. Mcgough
This thing is SWEET ! The grip-vac handle acts like a new fangled D-handle. There is a coarse adjustment along with a micrometer fine adj. knob. One of the 2 big plus's is that through the router table adj. that can be made with only 1 wrench. Any 3/16" nut driver will work just fine. The second big plus is how QUIET this router is!! At the 16.5K speed no ear muffs were needed. I have a pc690 and it is really loud. The 890 series is remarkably quiet. The slowest setting was extremely quiet where as the highest setting was still quiet when compared to the pc690. The first startup was used with a freud T & G set. And it ripped a 1/4" groove in white oak at the 16K speed setting without a burp.

5Strong Router but GripVac handle is almost feature-less
By MissingNoFingers
I bought this with the intent of using it on a router table, which works great. I also ordered the optional 75301 height adjustment tool for adjusting the height from the router table top which works nicely. Motor is strong and router was easy to mount to a high-end Kreg table. However, the GripVac handle is so small, I've had difficulty getting it to adapt to any dust collector fittings. Looks like I'll have to try Porter Cable's adapter to another adapter to another adapter - chaining three adapters is going to look ugly. Too bad they didn't have the forethough to include an adapter or make one that goes straight to the size you want. While I like this router, if I had it to do over again, I would have purchased the larger router 7518 or the 892 at a lower price, since the only difference seems to be the handle.FYI>> the power switch is NOT on the GripVac handle (surprisingly), so if you want something easy to switch off and on, get a D-handle model.

5Great dust collection
By Alisha Dalgewicz
I had done my research and this router deserves more reviews explaining that it is a top quality behemoth of a router! I love the grip vac. My only issue with getting this was that I didnt get the plunge router with the integrated dust port as well! Great control when routing from hand and is really easy to adjust depth from above the table with a key! It hooked up great to my 1 1/4" dust port (just put a strip of painting tape around the top hose for a really snug fit! Although this is a great router, I am most likely going to return it for the package containing also the plunge unit!

4Quality Tool for Specific Task
By Chet Griffter
I am building my own home and installing cement fiber siding. I had an eliptical and full circle transom around which I had to install 1/2" Hardi-trim, as well as lap siding and Hardi-shingles. I reluctantly paid the price for this single use tool because I was getting less than satisfactory results around an oval window using just a cement fiber blade in a circular saw, not to mention the cloud of choking dust which I'm sure will cause me cancer some day. One criticism is that the information for this tool does NOT SAY it will cut up to 1/2" fiber cement. It will do this handily. On straight cuts, it's clean and faster than a circular blade. On mild arcs, it works best if you cut from left to right (imagine the blade sweeping clockwise). On more aggressive arcs, it will cut but the end result may need a good bit of clean up with a utility knife. The aggressive arcs also require a good deal more force to make the turns. These comments all relate to 1/2". With standard 5/16" fiber cement siding, this machine cuts like a hot knife through butter. Another thing; I wish I had this tool when I was balanced on a scaffold last week instead of using the circular saw. It's solidly built. I dropped it several times from many feet. It feels competent and comfortable in my hand. I own many power tools and am sick of promised performance. In this case, I would recommend this to professionals as well as those who fear the amateur but very doable task of installing fiber cement siding. Now that I'm done with my project, you can buy mine!

5From a Contractor
By Greg
I have two professional Carpenter crews installing Hardie Siding 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I have used the Porter Cable and the Kett siding shears and these are a full step ahead of those. They are solid professoinal grade shears with full steel heads that don't break after one or two houses.I gave up on a circular saw some time ago becasuse of the cost (2-3 blades per house at a minimium cost of $30 per blade). Save your lungs and stay away from the light duty shears. Even if you are only doing one house these are the shears for you.My clients also appreciate the quiet work since we gave up the circular saws. One note - they cut a much wider piece out of the plank than a circular saw and can leave a bit of a rough end. If you are butting the siding to the trim then have a wood rasp handy to clean the end. If you are overlapping the trim this is not a problem.Only wish they had a shear that would cut the 3/4 inch trim!

5Pacific SS404 Shear
By J. Merrell
As a do it yourselfer , I was contemplating installing cement siding after receiving a quote for $3000 for installation only. I had read the reviews and decided to order the tool. The day after ordering, I was at the lumberyard, where this tool received a thorough bashing by people in the trade and those selling James Hardie siding. The main complaints were chipping and inability to make fine cuts --mostly that it was a good idea but highly overrated. After receiving the tool I left it unopened for several days contemplating its return while I awaited arrival of square drive stainless screws I had decided to use for fasteners. I finally decided to open it and give it aa try -- and was I glad I did. All of the reviews were true and it does cut cement siding like butter. Even my wife, who was reluctant for me to spend this much money was amazed and thought it was well worth the purchase. It truly makes the job fast and easy. I see no evidence of chipping and can do some fairly narrow cuts. This tool has saved me time, health and a lot of money. The stainless screws are about 10 times the expense of ringshanks -- but for the DIYer is more forgiving. When you make a mistake--you just back out the screws, fix the problem and go on. When I missed a stud on a butt joint, I was able to loosen the plank on one end, mark it with a trisquare and trim a little off with the shear while it was still on the house and cut a perfectly straight line. I highly recommend this tool!!

5Your lungs are priceless
By Brian Culver
I give this item 5 stars for performance. I bought this for two specific tasks: 1) I put sealer on my backyard fence using a spray gun, and 2) I stained and coated my picnic table with spar urethane. The mask ... and filters are actually heavy compared to others ... but even from the picture you can tell there is a whole lot of filter in these cartridges. Without the mask, the air wreaked to sealer and finish fumes. Put on the mask (correctly) ... no scent. This is priceless and exactly what you need to protect your lungs from harmful fumes. If you are thinking twice about these ... stop and just get them. You won't find better value for the protection ... I tried and bought crappy masks and filters before I got to these. The only positive to that is that I can have several friends watch me cut wood and produce much saw dust with the protection of my many various filters. So any Cons? Sure, the mask is exhausting to breathe through. It took me 2-3 hours to seal the fence ... I was worn out after breathing through this mask for that long. I even thought I breathed the fumes in because I was so tired. But later, when I was staining and finishing ... I experiened the same ... so I deliberately watched a movie with the mask on ... again I was tired. It is difficult to breathe through the mask .. but well worth it. If you need an all day solution, get some scuba gear or something better suited to that.Good luck.

95601 replacement cartridge does not fit the quicklatch respirator I purchased from you.The picture you show is the right picture for my respirator but the 95601 has a mettle base with threads on its outside not the hole in the back with the 3 prong slots.I'd send you a picture of the mask it fits but can't see how.The cartridge I needed has the #8053-p100stamped on it. The 95601 has the #R53-p100 stamped on it.Needless to say I went to the hardware store where I could see the cartridge I'm getting.

5a must have for construction projects with dust
By Andrew Ma
They flat out work. Skip the cheap disposable one when there is heavy particulate in the air. I suffer from allergies in a bad way and if I use this, no problem when working in the yard. I do look like a freak walking around with this on, but our cove is secluded so that's ok.This unit will clog rather quickly when used in a very dusty environment like sheetrock repair/work and concrete cutting. You'll smell it come through when it's saturated so you'll know to replace...

5THEY ARE NO LONGER MAKING THEM!!! WTF!?!@(%#
By Hector Cabrera Jr.
I've been doing drywall and taping for over 4 years now and have been using this product the whole time. This is by far the best reusable dust respirator out there, especially compared to the paper disposable masks that do nothing but lets in dust or whatever else your working on. For some reason they have decided to stop producing this and have taken them out from all retail stores. I guess now since 3M bought them out or whatever the hell happened, they have completely yanked the rug out of a quality product and now giving us crap. Way to go guys, way to ruin a perfectly awesome product.

5What happened to them?
By D. Trelford
These filters are perfect for sanding wood, cutting drywall, sweeping up dust, shaking out rugs etc. They fit the wonderful respirator perfectly and are easy to breath through yet effective at eliminating dust. The only problem is that they and the actual respirators are MIA.They can no longer be found anywhere. Why? Why do companys continually do this to people these days? They produce a product that works fine and is fairly priced and then as soon as people get used to it and start to count on it, they either change it or discontinue it! This is maddening. Now they are starting to call the simple dust filters with the elastic band respirators and people are buying them for the same price this used to be. Wake up people! contact AO and tell them you want it to stop.
