5Shaper better than a router table
By Ronald Haefner
A friend of mine bought one of these two years ago and he still talks about how well it works. I purchased one a couple of weeks ago and I am absolutely thinking of dumping all 3 of my router tables. All of my router tables are aluminum cast top with extension wings and all have 2hp routers. But I must say that even though this shaper is rated at 3/4 hp it has more than enough power to do the job.It can be set up for a shaper bits or for router bits. Grizzly includes a set of spacers for conversion to router bits though I suspect one could leave the spacers in and put the shaper arbor back in and place a 3/4 spacer on the arbor before setting the shaper bit. It came well packed and,as with all things Grizzly, a generous coating of the protective "stuff" that protects it during shipping. I dont mind the clean up as the alternative is a rusty machined surface. Assembly is straight forward and simple. A mobile base may be in order for some but keep in mind the unit can be a bit top heavy when moving it around. It has a solid cast iron table and spindle assembly. There is virtually no vibration and cuts are smooth. Router bits do tend to run a little slower than what one may be used to but it does not seem to be a proble and i have had no burning. rather the cuts seems to be smoother and less chip out compared to the router tables. The split fence is really interesting as you can lock down one side and adjust the other side relative to the first side or to the cutting bit. Or you can parallel the fences and move the whole assembly. Dust collection is a bit weak but to be fair its weak on most shapers and router tables. A simple design for a dust collection hood solves this problem very well and my prototype has been copied by a few already. I did make an extra fence that had taller boards so feather boards could be used. this is not a short coming of the machine but rather shows how flexible the machine is to one making specialty jigs. An interesting tip was when my friend used a 3 inch straight cut bit 1 inch diameter mounted to the shaper. He then set the left fence flush with the bit and locked it down. He could then adjust the right fence back a bit and he had a sideways jointer.I definetly am going to get another one of these. For a good router table and a router you will be really close to buying this machine. A perfect shop would have 3 of these. Two for styles and rails and a third just for raised panels. Then all 3 could be set exactly to the right depth.

5faster speed for small bits
By J. Tice
The speed is a little slow for smaller router bits. If you can find a 1.75 inch diameter pulley for the spindle this will put the rpms close to 12,000. Much better. The pulley is a metric one with a 17mm bore. Not easy to find. I turned my pulley down on my lathe and am very happy with the rpms now. The smaller bits work much better. It would be nice if Grizzly would include or offer a smaller pulley for using smaller bits with this unit. The Slot in the table is a little wider than 3/4" (metric?) some store bought feather boards may not fit the slot correctly.Really nice unit overall I'm happy with it... By the way the spindle bearings in my unit are NSK made in Japan! I was happy to see good quality bearings!

5Well made
By diane vidro
It is a very well made, and heavy. It is defiantly a improvement over our last shaper ( delta tabletop).

5Completed my project with ease...
By Larry R. Hutson
Purchased to re-work reclaimed lumber from an old granary I tore down. I removed old flooring and weathered siding from an old granary, cut off the damaged and dirty tongues and grooves, planed the wood, then cut new tongues and grooves with this set. I made enough flooring for a roughly 24 x 16 living room and 2 - 12 x 12 bedrooms, then made bead board from some of the siding to cover the ceilings in the two bedrooms and roughly 100 square feet of wainscot. This set never bogged down and kept a sharp, precision edge throughout the project. It appears to be up for whatever else I choose to throw at it. Very satisfied with the quality.

5Grizzly Shaper Cutter
By Diana Felten
Used it to tongue and grove 1 X 8" fir for wood on our great room ceiling. Made nice clean cuts. Thought we might make 3/4 of depth cut first and then finish with 2nd pass but worked great with one pass.

5wow!
By William B. Scarbor
I've been putting this off for years. I have a 1978 craftsman saw. The original fence was a joke, so I bought the Craftsman XRC Align-a-Rip on sale for just over $100 thinking it was a good fence, but little did I know until it arrived that it was just another fence that you had to push from the back before you could lock it. I dealt with this for years until finally I had enough! (and enough money). I read the Wood Magizine review, and it seemed this shopfox fence was equal with the Biseymiser. Couldn't get the Biseymiser as good of a price as this one with the same length rail. I was very impressed when it arrived. I weighs so much they shipped it to my house on a UPS semi! This fence is rock solid and I don't see how any other fence could be any better. I like the way these models lock with nothing in the front to worry about.

4Fence is great...
By Just a Guy
I will have to say that this is a good fence. It wasn't hard to install and setup once you understood how it goes together. The locking mechanism is solid and seems to hold well. the only thing that takes away from a 5 star review is the hardware (nut, bolts, washers). I don't think that the manufacturer could have used cheaper hardware if they tried. Come on, the thing is 275 dollars!!!! At least splurge and give grade 5 bolts!! And what's with a 1/4-20 bolt having a 10mm head, (really they have 1/4-20 thread and a 10mm head, WTF!!! I still REALLY like this fence for it's simplicity and repeatability but not for it's hardware. After the fence is shipped to you and you're going to install it figure out what bolts you need and make a trip to the hardware store and spend the extra 2 bucks that the manufacturer didn't want to.

4Great Product!! But bad/cheap install hardware & tools
By K. Chereck
The fence, rails, and legs themselves are very well built. My fence was only .010" of of true, which was easily offset when adjusting it to the blade. Proper installation will take upwards of 2 hours but its worth it. My only complaints are with the cheap installation hardware and tools they include with the kit. Do yourself a favor and make a trip to the hardware store for some grade 5 bolts before you start the installation. The drill bit which was sent with my kit is bent about 15 degrees off of dead center, making it impossible to use. Surprisingly the tap wasn't bad, it lasted long enough to make the 4 holes I needed to. Overall I'm very happy with it though and wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again.

5Armor Against Arc
By FJE
This product protects your skin from heat, molten metal, and stray brush wires (from a wire wheel) better than anything i've ever worn! Ideal for overhead welding as the shower of fire from above rarely penetrates through the soft comfy hide. It can get a bit hot under the leathers, which is why I am glad the bib is easily and quickly removable.

4Shopfox G8826 Fence
By L. Van
I recently upgraded my Grizzly G1022Z 10" Contractor Style Table Saw with the purchase of the Shopfox G8826 Fence. The original was pretty good, but the Shopfox is hands down a better system. First, it is heavy. Ship weight is seventy-seven pounds and nearly all of it is steel. The rails are heavy angle iron and the box-tube the fence locks on is similarly built. The fence itself is very substantial. Since the fence locks only at the near end, the heavy materials make sense. The fence has no micro-adjustment (I wish it did) but moves very easily on nylon slides. The fence moves and aligns true with the table with virtually no shifting when locking it down. I immediately noted easier ripping and much less (very little) burning. The poly side panels are slick. On the con side, were two issues. First, the locking lever broke off in my hand the first time I engaged it and with no pressure. There was no apparent shipping damage to the lever. Grizzly provides the support and immediately shipped a replacement which I received in about five days. The second issue related tothe poly side panels. The two nearest mounting holes on the left side of the fence are drilled about 5/32nd of an inch too high leaving a gap between the poly and the table top. The right side poly is perfect. Grizzly tech support offered to replace the fence though I would have send mine back before they would ship another. I could see another two weeks go by, and I didn't want to invest time reinstalling my old fence system and reinstalling the Shopfox again later. After discussing it with their tech, I removed the left side poly, drilled new holes (not as simple as it sounds) counter sunk them and remounted it. It is now acceptable though I was peeved to have to do it.The bottom line is the fence is a great fence. Quality control was lacking in two instances. If I were doing this again, I would buy the same fence, but would buy it local, save $44 shipping and take it back if it has a problem.

3The fence is pretty good
By jason bellisle
Well I have to say that it was shipped in a timely manor and have one issue with this and that there is no way to adjust the fence 90 degrees to the table which really sucks you would think for the money it would of come with that.I should of probably spent the extra money to get a biesemeyer.I had a older shop fox fence W1411 which was cheaper and they still sell it at grizzly had an adjustment on it for that. The fence is built very well and matched right up to my saw without tapping new holes which was nice.I have tried readjusting the rails and still was off just a very little bit, but it was enough to aggravate me.I just thought of one more thing that bothers me is when you measure form the blade to the fence you have to adjust for the movement when you push the cam lock into place.Once I get the kinks out hopefully it will be a good fence.

3Good Fence bad cursor
By Nathan Boris
Very good fence well worth the cost, especially compared to B'meyer (which I also have). The biggest achilles heel is the mag. cursor and parallax. Almost everyone has complained about this thing for years but yet Shop Fox does not offer an option to replace it. The real option is to make your own or buy one from B'meyer and drill and tap new holes. Sad, a 50 cent piece of plastic destroys million dollor reputation - repeately year after year! That is good management!

4Basic but Functional
By Big Al
As noted by a previous reviewer, this same model (all made by Sieg in China) are available from a variety of sources. I purchased mine from Grizzly, largely because of the support that Grizzly provides. If I were to purchase this same milling machine again, I would probably go with Micro-Mark which is about the same price. The big difference is that the Grizzly version uses 0.060"/turn on the x and y axis and 0.0625"/turn on the Z-axis, while the Micro-Mark uses 0.050"/turn on all axis. It's a lot easier to dial in, say a 0.384 movement at 0.050"/turn than it is to divide 0.0625 into 0.384 to determine the number of full turns and the add'l thousands needed to hit 0.384 exactly.Anyone considering a small milling machine probably knows that you'll spend nearly as much on tooling as the initial purchase price of the mill. With this mill, plan on additional purchases of a belt drive kit ($120)to replace the noisey, failure prone gear train and an air spring kit ($40)to replace the cheesey torsion spring mechanism. Without the air spring kit, the mill head will occasionally drop 50 thou or so, resulting in an undesired gouge in your work piece. Both kits are available from LittleMachineShop.com (an Amazon supplier).Provided that you don't push it too hard, this little guy will handle machining of small steel, brass, aluminum, delrin, etc. work pieces with accuracy of +/- a few thou. To do that, however, plan on investing a considerable amount of time on tuning the machine by polishing and adjusting the gibbs and tweaking the nuts on the lead screws to minimize backlash. Besides improving the performance of the machine, this tuning will improve your understanding of how all the pieces fit together to perform the milling function.

4Good Hobby Mill
By Robert F
I bought mine from Harbor Freight, an attractive option if there is a store nearby. None of these mills are ready to run out of the box, a considerable amount of cleaning and fine tuning is needed first. However, someone who is interested enough in the intricacies of machining will not find these tasks much of a problem. The Harbor Freight mill has the annoying 0.060"/turn axis, but I solved that with a Sumatech digital readout kit. Another good economical choice in DRO's is Yadro. To save even more, just mount cheap digital calipers to the axis and read them directly. The bottom line is that you will spend at least as much as you did on the mill outfitting it with bits, vises, clamps, and useful improvements like the gas spring and belt drive modifications. However, once you've spent about $1,000, you will have a capable and accurate little machine shop on your workbench. For a small machine, it is surprisingly powerful. I've cut difficult to machine materials like stainless steel on it, breaking a few bits in the process but so far no parts of the machine itself.

2Stupid Spindle Taper
By Fuzzbean
A few companies sell basically this same machine in the United States. I myself bought one from Harbor Freight, and it is an OK machine within its limits. The thing about the Grizzly version is it has an MT3 spindle taper, which is basically a drill press taper, instead of the R-8 taper that most other companies in the United States offer. R-8 is not a world standard by any means, but here in the US it is by far the standard spindle taper for "small" (as in Bridgeport size on down) vertical milling machines. Why Grizzly continues to offer their machine with the odd taper is beyond me. If you buy the Grizzly version, spindle tooling will be somewhat harder to find, probably more expensive, and if you upgrade to virtually any larger mill later on you will have to buy it all over again. Also the MT3 taper, in drill presses, normally does not use a drawbar whereas R-8 always uses a drawbar. For this reason MT3 has a more gradual taper so the tool wedges and does not drop out. What this means in milling machine use is that the MT3 taper tools wedge tighter in the spindle and are harder to eject when you want to eject them than R-8 taper tools.I can understand Grizzly maybe offers better customer service on many machines. But all the parts of this particular machine are readily and cheaply available from LittleMachineShop.com anyway, so unless it is initially defective I see no big advantage. And HF has come through for me on customer service for defective items in the past, though they sure don't seem to emphasize service much on their site or in their catalogs. LMS is actually recommended by the Chinese manufacturer of these machines as a world-wide service parts supplier, by the way.
