5Better than most, and a good price
By D. B. Spalding
Most good to excellent CTR channel speakers will cost you more. $250 - 300 for the highest rated (CR) is not unusual. I bought a Cambridge Soundworks MC150, under a sales misimpression that it was a "center" channel speaker. No. So off I went to see if this was still on a shelf as an open box special. Glad it was. I tested it in the speaker listening room, and it did MASTER AND COMMANDER justice. For comparison, I tried out some music selections with Bose 161s (where are superb SL and SR surround speakers), and they had clear precise highs, and sufficient bass for most center channel needs. Then the sales guy and I hooked up the NS-C444 to one of the channels, and played the same selections. The Yamaha compared favorably. Now you might be thinking, hey, it's only a center channel, what's it got to do other than just dialog and left-to-right transition. Not that simple, friend. The center channel is one speaker in your home theatre that is ALWAYS doing something, always providing sound. You want a capable one. You also want one with excellent dynamic response and clarity. Case in point: The scene when CAPT Ramius addresses his crew after submerging in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. You hear Connery's voice in the foreground, then over the 1MC intercom circuit, then booming across the sub's bridge. Another example: Obi-wan talking to Dex in Star Wars Episode II. If the center channel is inferior, he and Dex sound like they're chatting inside a box. If the center speaker is up to the standard of your left and right speakers, they sound full and rich and "present" (right there in your living room). Another point to ponder: if you watch old, monaural pictures with some stereo DSP, a lot of the soundtrack will come from your center speaker. A quick test for scenes like this: switch your receiver to "2 channel stereo" (or a mode that mixes down Dolby/DTS 5.1 to the LF and RF speakers), then switch to 5.1 decoding. Do the voices sound the same?Pick a good center channel and your home theatre will benefit immensely. I think this one is excellent. Consumer Reports lists a couple of other good bets that you can find for < $200. Happy hunting....

5Very good sounding and extremely good priced center speaker
By Brian Vu
I purchased this center speaker for my bedroom system from J&R throughAmazon for only $89 with free shipping. At this price, it is definitelythe best sounding center speaker for the money.I have a higher end system in my family room. I am a little spoiled withthis system since my center of this system is a $1000 Definitive CLR3000.I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I first hooked it up andturned on the music. First, the material grade of the speaker is firstgrade. I was very surprised at this price point Yamaha can make this speaker of this build and finish. Then I put on on some instrumental music. The sound clarity is superb, and is almost as good as my Definitive CLR3000. The mid is warm. For movies, it produces very cleardialog. For one tenth of the money I spent on the CLR3000, I'd say it is worth much more and probably ranked among the best in the up-to-$300 price range.I almost bought the Polk Csi3 since I was able to listen to one. I was not completely happy with it because its high is not too clear. I bought the NS-C444 based on reviews, and I am glad I did because it is definitely a better speaker both in build and sound quality.

5Beautiful speakers with beautiful sound!
By Scott Lewis
I'm no audiophile, but I know good speakers when I hear them. These play all ranges of music and movies very well. There is not as much low-end bass as I would expect from 2 8" drivers unless I add it from the receiver (Sony STR-DA1000ES). My receiver only pushes 100 watts/channel, which I was worried would not be enough... I was wrong. Eric Clapton and the Eagles never sounded so good! If you're looking for high quality sound with tight bass notes and crisp highs, these are your speakers. If you're looking for a booming sound for Rap or Action movies, I would suggest complementing these with a subwoofer.Lastly, the "piano" black finish on the outside of these speakers is spectacular. Everyone thinks they are way more expensive than they are because of the finish and size. Just be careful when taking them out of the box so as not scratch the finish.

5A Truly Amazing Speaker For The Price You Pay!!!!
By J. Irish
If you just happend to stumble accross this speaker or the ONE you are seeking out, this is one of the best values for a brand new floorstanding speaker you can find on the net!! I paid $400 for a pair with shipping and after listening to Klipsch speakers for many years I was at first reluctant to "settle" for something else. Let me tell you after I received them I hooked them up as front speakers to my home theater with Klipsch speakers for the surround and 12" subwoofer with a Onkyo receiver pushing 110w rms 7 ways. My first concern was that at high levels the speakers would distort, but that was imedietely tossed out as these babies would take whatever I would give them and they would just SING!! The highs were crisp and clean and the mids didn't miss a beat. I wouldn't necessarily say there is a lack of bass, as these are designed to be matched with a subwoofer, however, they do put out some respectable lows when used as a 2 channel. The cabinet is a beautiful piano finish which alone makes it look like a $1,000 pair of speakers! A unique and elegant looking speaker with the amazing sound to follow up and all for a reasonable price!!!

5Great speakers!
By Happy Ears
I bought a pair of NS777 to replace bose 501 series V speakers. I am truly amazed with the quality compared to the bose ones. I never like the bose speakers, they were hard to equalize and I always felt like they were yelling at me all the time no matter what settings I would have the receiver on. The NS777 are affordable speakers ($169 each) with a sound quality that brought back my passion for listening to music including classical music. I have them connected to an onkyo TX-SR804 and they have been working great together, now I just feel like I need to replace my center speaker, a bose VCS-10, that also "yells" at me when compared to the Yamaha NS777. I am extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend them to anyone in a tight budget. It works great with movies as well.

5These Rule!!!!
By Mr. Aaron J. Aldridge
I bought these speakers only after I made the mistake and purchased the NS-125s. After being very disappointed with those speakers, I was looking for anything to cheer me up. Then when my package of NS-555's came, and I set them up...wow!! I am using them as my main speakers, along with my Yamaha receiver, center, rear and powered sub. I wanted to go wtih Yamaha speakers as my main to complete my setup. All I can say, after I figured my receiver for the better main speakers, I was litterly blown away. These speakers rock and now my TV room sounds like a movie theater. I was worried that my receiver wouldn't have enough power for these speakers. I am running 75 watts per channel in theater mode and 100 watts in stereo mode. Even with the 75 watts, I can not even turn my system above -30 before the sounds starts to rock the entire house!!! This was the sound that I was looking for when I first had my idea of a home theater system.Overall I highly recommend these speakers. I could not beleive the power difference between the NS-125s, and for only $50 more per speaker, the choice is all ready made easy! These speakers sound great. I can hear sounds in movies that I never heard before, seeing I was using a 2 way speaker and upgraded to a 3 way. All I need now is to upgrade my center to a 3 way and I am done!

4Consider yourself lucky...
By Real McCoy
Consider yourself lucky that you've run across these speakers. I'm not an audiophile, but I like to believe I have a decerning ear for reasonable sound quality. These speakers look and sound great - I'm using as my fronts along with the ns-444 center and the onkyo sub/surrounds that came with my hts-770 HTIB. I'm very satisfied. My only negative is that, at low volume levels, the sound tends to be a little strained (that's the only word I can think to describe it). I'm convinced it's my receiver though. Looking forward to upgrading my Onkyo 520 so I can REALLY hear these bad boys shine!

5NS-555 Audiophile speakers on a shoestring budget
By John Erickson
I recently hooked up a pair of these NS-555 speakers from Yamaha as the fronts for my surround sound system which are of course the mains for any 2 channel stereo music listening. Originally, I had some small Yamaha bookshelf speakers, the NS-6490's in the front but when I replaced my OLD Sony home theater receiver with a Yamaha RVX663 I found the 6490's a little wanting. After looking at a number of speakers in my budget and the reviews of the NS-555's on a variety of web sites I decided to do an "all in the Yamaha family" selection and got them.Hooking them up and playing them the initial sound was a bit too stiff in a seemingly precise but harsh way HOWEVER after about 90 minutes of play time there was a more than a subtle change in the sound quality as they smoothed out tremendously yet still very natural, precise sounding. Some people do not believe that speakers are capable of "breaking in" but to my ears this was a substantial change. They sound very good now and there are those that say it takes about 100 hours of playing for speakers to completely break in. I feel there is no doubt there will be some improvement in the coming weeks, althought I doubt as dramatic as that at about 90 minutes in.A small number of some reviewers report that the NS-555's do not have enough bass capabilities. i on the other hand can report that I am more than pleasantly surprise at the bass response I am getting from them and I am using a single lead hook up. Yamaha's design allows for bi-wire hook ups on the NS-555's, using seperate leads for the midrange and tweeter then a lead specifically for the woofers, it maybe possible to then increase the bass response to a higher level. I am willing to try the bi-wire set up and have some good spade connectors on their way for that purpose. The NS-555's can take banana plug ins also which is quick and easy.Currently I am using the OPPO DV-983H DVD player also as the CD player and it really compliments the system well. The picture is excellent thru the RXV663 and the sound from both DVD's, CD's, SACD's and a variety of DVD audio titles have all been great. CD listening seeems to be the most clear and natural when using the RXV663 two settings that are close in sound "Straight" and also a "Pure Direct" that really allow the speakers to shine with the content of a good sounding CD. Some CD's where the recording is from really old sources like poor tapes and 78's can benefit from some of the sound scenes the amp can produce.MSRP for these are $249.95 for a single so $500 for the pair. Careful searches can find some really good bargins on these so look carefully.Fit and finish seems top notch and the sound rivals some speaker systems I have heard that are at a much higher price point. So far in the sound quality for dollar aspect these are hitting a home run in my book.

5Best bookshelf speakers for less than $150/pr
By Fishing Fool
I ordered these from another online vendor a couple years ago to use as side and rear surround speakers in a 7.1 channel setup. I also ordered the NS-777s floor standing towers + the NS-C444 center channel. These are very nice speakers but you need to break them in for a long time. These speakers have a bass reflex design eg they're ported. These speakers are also known to have a slightly recessed mid frequency output, but overall they sound very good for the money. They are perfect for home theater applications. They are clear with music but again the mids are slightly recessed. The highs from these speakers are very strong and metallic because it uses an aluminum dome tweeter. They sound similar to the titanium domes. The highs are not soft/smooth like silk/fabric domes. The metal dome coupled to the integrated waveguide disperses the highs very well though. The cabinets have a very nice glossy piano black finish to them which makes them look very expensive and classy. They are also hefty at around 12lbs each. It's unfortunate that Yamaha has stopped using their trademark white spruce cones in their speakers. Those cones were the best.

5A working mans pleasure!
By Larry A. Patrick
Do you have a BMW or shop in Birmingham Michigan? If yes, you can afford to waste big money getting that bigger speaker name. Five percent more listening pleasure for 200% more money. Go for it! For the working man... these beauties are a rare find. I love these speakers...with the sub woofer. The price, quality, reviews, listening experience grabbed me. I love it when I can clearly hear separation left, right or center (NS-444 displaying excellent musical separation. I sit in my chair and squirm like a kid. Hey, I'm 61. The quality is there. The piano black Finnish is superb. The Yamaha NS-333 price is for the working man. The quality is for The Beamers. The sound is for all of us.

4Great sounding speakers!
By B.Taylor III
I was Impressed with the sound that these speakers produced in my small living room. At 100/120 RMS, these will run circles around any BOSE! Keep in mind that this is a Mid to Hi-range Speaker, so for the Low range, you will need a Sub. (If you use these for your front speakers.) In addition, the NS-555 and -777 is essentually the same as the -333(given, larger enclosure) with 2 low-range speakers (with seperate +/- Posts). For cinema it may be best to buy 2 or 3 pair for a 6/7 channel reciever and a Sub woofer, than to spend money on the (2)555 or (2)777.

4mtx 421d mono amplifier
By jayface
I got one of these to push a 12" sony x-plod rated at 300 watts rms. The 421d is a small monster,my sub is a 4ohm sub placed in sealed enclosure and at this load the specs say it puts out 150watts rms believe me its a true rating, probably under rated and i can also wire it in a 2ohm load giving another 150watts. WHEN i looked at this amp i saw knowone had any thing to say as a review so i thought i might give one , it might just help someone make up their mind. All in all i like this amp if it lasts a while i will up date my review.

5Attractive, Sturdy Storage bench
By constant shopper
This is a great bench. I bought mine at toys r us and have owned it for about 3 or 4 years now. It has a stone/sand look to it. The best-looking storage bench that I have seen. It is very sturdy-heavy duty. My kids destroy everything they touch and this has held up great, just like the day I bought it. I use it to store the kids outdoor play stuff. Two adults can sit on this bench no problem, not wobbbly or sinking. Highly recommended. Great-looking bench. Great Quality.
