5Best durn tool I've bought!
By K. Kyler
I think it is unfair to rate a tool poorly because one didn't understand the shipping policies. I agree that buying large tools via the Internet is a hassle, but that is the buyer's choice. Now for the shaper. I love it! I don't use my router much at all since getting this shaper. I bought the router bit spindle adapter and switch back and forth easily between router bits and cutters. I recently bought a full set of cutters for raised panel doors and this tool makes life easy! One pass and you are done--nice smooth cuts.I'm very happy.

5A Good Machine for the Small Shop
By Minnesota Woodworker
I recently purchased a G1035 shaper to primarily edge profile and it does a great job of this with the 3/4" bore shaper cutters I use. Both the fence and table insert adjust well. The 1 1/2 HP motor is strong enough although larger raised panel cutters will require an extra pass or two. I installed the optional 3" dust collection port and it works well. I have the machine wired for 110V and use 20 Amp service.

1Poor quality control
By P. Marks
First, let me say that I like the basic design of this shaper. If properly manufactured and assembled, it would pack a lot of capability in a small footprint. That said, the unit I received had numerous quality defects -- one of which merits a safety recall and two others that make the unit unfit for use. I've spent a couple sessions with Grizzly to fix the problems, but most of the problems still remain. There were three main defects upon opening and assembling the unit. First, the spindle bearing unit had excessive end and side play. I could literally move the spindle back and forth and up and down. There's no adjustment for the bearings, according to Grizzly, so the entire bearing assembly was defective.Second, the unit came set up for 110 volts (it's a dual voltage motor), but both the power and switch to motor cords were only the metric equivalent of about 18 gauge. This would be adequate for 220 volt operation, but undersized for the higher (2x) current draw at 110 volts. This defect could lead to a fire in your shop, especially if the shaper is used for long periods of time and the cord heats up and breaks down.Third, one of the fence adjusting screws had a "drunken" thread. The thread was completely bunged up in the middle (probably a broken cutting tool during manufacture in China) and the fence could not be adjusted. There were other minor defects. For example, I had to rework the spindle mounting clamp in order to get it to clamp without a wobble.I called Grizzly to outline the three main problems. To their credit, they had me return the old spindle and then sent a new spindle. However, with the tighter bearings of replacement spindle the shaper vibrates excessively and walks a bit on the floor. It vibrates more and is noisier than any of dozens of other power tools I own, some many decades old. I suspect that Grizzly is using very cheap bearings, based on the bit of play in one spot on the new spindle and also the vibration. As a direct comparison, I have a much older Grizzly shaper that's far better with respect to vibration.Grizzly sent a properly sized line cord, but the wrong cord to go between the switch and motor. In order to allow reversing, this should be a five conductor cord. What they sent was a three conductor cord. Quite simply the wrong part and yet another quality of service issue. They tried again, but just sent another undersized cord. When a proper fence adjusting screw did not arrive, I called again to hear what was going on. It turned out the fence they sent me was an old style (2005 vintage) with a 1/2-13 screw. The new ones, according to Grizzly, use a 3/8" adjusting screw. So, my made-in-2007 shaper had both a defective and an obsolete (supposed-to-be-for 2005) adjusting screw. Apparently Grizzly either doesn't know its own bill of materials or its supplier isn't building to it.So, despite several calls, some effort on the part of Grizzly, and lots of wasted time on my part I have a machine that vibrates excessively, whose fence cannot be easily adjusted, with a cord that could burn up in prolonged use.At about the same time as buying this shaper, I also bought a HVLP spray gun and a jointer blade system from Grizzly. Both were improperly described in the catalog. The dimensions on the planer blades were wrong. The HVLP spray gun was described in both the Grizzly catalog and in the enclosed manual as having both fine and regular spray heads. It only had the regular head -- and Grizzly basically said too bad, we're not going to stand behind our description. They actually told me to try my luck with Campbell Hausfeld, their supplier. If this trend continues, will Grizzly have their customers calling China to get missing parts?Sadly, you can't trust the catalog or Web site to be accurate, and judging from my shaper experience a call may not get you accurate information either.Grizzly was one of the better importers of tools in the past. But in my recent experience it appears the company isn't paying much attention to quality control either from its Chinese suppliers, in its own State-side assembly, in parts service, manual descriptions, or even catalog descriptions. You may get a good machine as others have, but also be aware that your chances of getting a "lemon" from Grizzly may be fairly high.

4Good, but needed a fix
By Starting over in New Orleans
This shaper is a solid value and works well, however, while I was assembling the shaper I noticed the fence was out of line by about an 1/8 of an inch. Manual says to shim the fence boards, but don't bother. Instead take a closer look at the screw holes in the housing cover where it attaches to the table top. One of the holes was clearly not where the other one was. After spending time elongating the hole, I could finally get the two fences to line up. Other than that, no problems. Also, comes with a cast iron hand wheel instead of the plastic one whown in the photos.

4Wright Cabinets
By S. Wright
Useful machine - we have 2 in the shop and they work well in tandem doing production rails and stiles for doors, windows and cabinet ends. Not sure that they are up to the job of working all day on the raised panels that we do but then we also have a 5hp beast that does that with a power feeder. All in all, a good buy for the dollar and I would rather buy three of these rather than one of 3 combo machines that Grizzly make. Better than the Delta and not nearly as expensive as the Powermatic...

4Just got my shaper and so far so good!
By Rand T. Frantz
Price can't be beat. Only drawback (so far) is the clean up of the grease and oil. Have a lot of rags and some kind of degreaser ready. They cover the bare metal with a grease/wax of some sort and put all kinds of oil in the small parts bags. On the up side, I didn't notice any rust and that's the whole idea. I was expecting much less than I got with this shaper. It has a nice fence, good fit and finish and solid running motor. There is no dust collection port on the fence, however. So, it is necessary to fabricate one to attach to the rear. I am skeptical about how well that will work though. The cutter area has many openings where chips can fly and even with rear dust collection chips will find their way out, I believe. All in all, I feel I got a good machine.

4The first few weeks on the Grizzly Knife Sander
By Charles C. England
I have been using the Grizzly in an armor making project and have only positive impressions. Its built solidly, tracks well, and blet changes are quick and simple. I've not had the opportunity to try commercial equipment but would have a hard time imagining better value for the money.

5grizzly knife edge grinder
By charlie hamburger
I bought this on recommendation of a friend who has built two van's RV airplanes. He said it was the tool he used most in sheet metal work. I bought mine to help me in restoring some old motorcycle projects. This is a great tool and in conjunction with a buffer, can restore and polish all kinds of metal and castings. You can even sharpen knives with it. I use mine all the time.I suggest buying the 3M Trizact belts to go with it. They last a very long time. Much longer than other belts. This tool is well worth the money and I'm glad I have it. It makes sanding before polishing much easier.

5Used over 8 years
By D. Tingle
I've had this sander for over 8 years with no problems. I use it almost every time I work in my shop. For general work you can't beat the price. May not be what a full time knifemaker would need, but for general blacksmithing and metal work it does just fine.

4Hard to beat it for the money
By Wood Wizard
NOTE: The G1006 mill and the G1007 mill are EXACTLY THE SAME MILL. The G1007 has the addition of an X axis power feed. So this review applies for both.First off I generally like this machine. The few problems I've found can be worked around or are just fit/finish pet peeves. If you're upgrading from a drill press and this is what you can afford, I say go for it without reservation. On the other hand, if you can afford a full size knee mill and are willing to move the thing, don't cheep out. Buy the knee mill. Here is why:Vertical head adjustment - The head can be moved vertically on the pipe column via a hand crank. This serves the same function as raising/lowering the knee on a full size mill. While this makes gross adjustment of the spindle to table quick and easy, it's also sloppy. That set up with the head on a pipe saves a BUNCH of cost. The problem is it also allows the head to swivel when you loosen the bolts to adjust the head height. That means all the work you did aligning your spindle to center is lost. You can get around this with planning and experience, but you'll want to think through your cuts before you get started.Vertical depth stop is cheesy - So the mill has a cast iron collar that clamps around the quill. This collar then has a screw that goes up into that face you see on the front of the mill. So far so good. On this screw is a cheep, badly cast, plastic nut 'thing' which has the depth indicator screwed to it. Mine has about 3/16'' of slop in the threads. Add that to the only thing the 'stop nut' has to stop against is the bottom of the plastic face housing. I figure it will cost me about $25 to get a credible replacement for that screw/nut set up. At which point I'll have a solid depth stop with tolerance too about 1/100th''. For now I'm just using the micro down feed to get depth.Plastic feed hold levers on X cross slide - OK. so they work. But they also flex when you put any kind on pressure on them. I just don't see these holding up over time. Easy to replace with cap screws from the local hardware store. Then use a small second hand socket wrench for adjustment. Again a $10 solution.Feed knobs are plastic and a bit small - As far as these being made of plastic, it's good plastic. They feel solid and have almost no flex. That said, they feel like plastic, and there is slight flex. Grizzly also put good tight gibs on this machine. While this is good, it makes precise adjustments with small knobs a bit finicky. The hand wheel for the micro down feed is also too close to the front of the head. When gripping the entire wheel for fine feed control you can get your fingers caught between the wheel and front of the mill head. Grizzly sells upgrade mettle hand wheels for good prices. It also doesn't look too bad to make your own. I just wish the machine didn't give me the urge.Included accessories are junk - The mill comes with a 3'' fly cutter, a 3'' angle vice, and 1/2'' drill chuck. The fly cutter is OK, but quickly made. Extra welt on the face of the teeth make it a pain to sharpen. The angle vice is cheep. It's small, clunky, and worth about $30. A standard 'shrug and put it on the shelf' type item. The drill chuck is about as cheep as they come. It's movement is loose and mind has a slight stick as you adjust it. I bought a Ryobi bench top drill press a few years ago for $100. It has a nicer chuck. The fly cutter is handy once you clean it up, but don't plan on using the rest. Now for the good, and there is LOTS of good:Huge table - with 23'' X travel you can't find a bigger table with more feed for less than 2 1/2 times the price. Use the entire length or set a 6'' vice on one end and a 10'' rotary table on the other! I've done both and been nothing but happy. The table definitely has the fit/finish of a quality machine.R8 spindle taper - If you're new to collet spindles don't be intimidated. These are GREAT. Just get a set of collets with the mill and you're set. I got the Grizzly G1646 set of 12 for about $75. There are cheaper sets out there but I found this set to be quality. R8 is also a fairly standard spindle for much higher end machines. That means when you upgrade you can take your tooling with you!Clutch engaged down feed - This is awesome! Use the side crank to get close, turn a knob to engage the clutch, then go the rest of the way with the micro feed. Need the spindle out of the way? Turn the knob again and the feed spring pulls it out of the way! There is also a locking lever on the left side to ensure your Z axis doesn't change when feeding the X or Y axis.Speed changes - The first time you move the belts might feel cumbersome. Once you get used to it you'll won't think twice. Grizzly put nice BIG solid pulleys on this machine so you generally don't need to get crazy with the belt tension. There are 2 bolts and a lever for setting the tensioners and Grizzly gives you a good wrench for the bolts. Plan on having access to the right side of the machine (facing) and everything will work fine.Only 600ish Lbs - This sounds bad, but it's not. One 'not dim' guy with a rented engine hoist can move/set up this mill. If you put the machine on a wide stand with good casters you can role it around the shop as you like! On the other hand, with a full size knee mill your options are: 1) fork lift 2) suicide.Packing - it comes bolted to a solid pallet, covered in packing grease, wrapped in plastic, framed in wood and surrounded in heavy gauge card board. The packing is such that if it's been set on its side or dropped it will show. When the freight guy delivers it BE PICKY! Grizzly doesn't ship anything but clean and pristine crates. If it's dirty or damaged the freight company did it! CALL THEM ON IT! The packing grease is a mess, but it wipes off easy and your machine is spotless and well lubed when your done!I own this machine, so if you have questions post them as a reply to this review and I'll give you an unbiased answer as soon as I see your question.

5Very impressive
By Scott Pointon
I searched and searched and finally came to the conclusion that for the average home woodworker's budget, there are three types of bandsaws. Cheap ones that you will wish you didn't buy (think 12" saws made in China and sold at the big box stores), medium priced saws that are ok but have some serious shortcomings (think of the Delta and Jet low-medium priced models), and saws that are good but expensive (Powermatic and Delta X5). After reading absolutely everything written on the subject in the past 5 years (I am a librarian after all) I decided that this Grizzly saw deserves a category of its own. Though it is priced closer to the "cheap" category than the other two, it sports features and performance that are much closer to the "expensive" saw category. Now that I own this saw I can say that my experience supports my research and vica-versa. Once it was properly set up, this saw has minimal vibration and I quickly came to appreciate features such as a great stand, excellent blade guides, a decent sized table (ground to a nice finish), blade quick-detentioner, a smooth running powerful motor, and a lightweight yet strong and accurate fence and rail system. Did I mention the stand? I am almost embarrased to go on about it, but from the pictures I was expecting a cheapo thin sheet metal stand that I would replace asap. Boy was I wrong. This stand is HEAVY gauge metal and bolts together quickly and perfectly to form a rock solid platform for this saw. I will never bother to change it. I am also well pleased with the power of the 1hp motor. I almost spent hundreds more for the Jet 1.25hp model and am really glad I didn't. With the 6" riser block and an average quality Olson resaw blade installed I have been able to resaw some HARD, 12" wide old growth pine into beautiful bookmatched pieces without so much as a stutter. I wasn't terribly gentle with the feed rate either. It has also handled resawing 6" white oak and walnut with ease.Overall I can't say enough good things about this saw. The power is excellent, the features all exceed the hype, and the price is outstanding compared to the competition. I highly recommend this product and give Grizzly an A+ for offering high quality at such a great price.

5Still a great saw, 13 months later
By Jon C Sandberg
After many months of agonized research, the decision was made to purchase this saw. I figured that because it was less expensive, it must be inferior. That is simply wrong. This saw has now been in service for over a year. It has run two-to-four hours a day, 5 days a week, for 13 months. The saw has never had a mechanical problem. The fence is still dead on. The motor has NEVER stalled, even when ripping 8/4 oak. I saved enough money buying this saw a year ago, and am so incredibly impressed, that now I am buying a second one. The second saw will have cool-blocks and keep a 1/8 inch blade permanently mounted. Both saws will cost less than ONE Delta. And the delta does not even have a fence. Also, the blade tensioning and release is much superior, and the dust collection is a a 4 inch port instead of 2 1/2 inch plastic piece that gets in the way.

The saws arrived with one 3/8's inch blade that is 92 1/2 inches long. The only vendor that I have found for that lengh blade is Grizzly and it now seems that they are discontinuing their stock.

The table tilt mechanism works well for a saw of this size. The rails for the fence are long enough to be able to mount the fence in FRONT of the blade when the saw is tilted. This was a very pleasant surprise.

The handle broke off of the miter in the first months after my purchase. Customer service was fast, and accurate, and professional. The replacement part arrived in less than 72 hours.

All-in-All... This is the best saw at this size on the market today.

4The Grizzly GO555 -- A Fine 14" Bandsaw
By Randy Ardie Davis
I have delayed writing this review because I wanted several months and board feet under my belt before making comment. As my title suggests, it is a fine band saw for the money -- certainly a lot better than my old Craftsman 14"er that it replaced.I'll get my complaints out of the way first:1. The blade it comes with, and the other Grizzly blades I bought, are poor, poor blades. They go dull very, very quickly. I ended up buying a 3/4" 3tpi Lennox 92.5" Classic bi-metal and things improved dramatically.2. The saw does not have a light to illuminate the blade and cutting area. Even my old Craftsman had a decent light to help see the work in progress.3. Dust collection is barely adequate - even with the 4" chute and my 4" collection hoses. It leaves a lot of dust on the table and around the saw.Now to what I like about it, in no particular order:1. I love the table and fence system. The fence is easy to move and remove and accurate enough for my needs.2. It is fairly quite and vibration free.3. It handles re-sawing (with the Lennox blade) with ease. I re-saw 3" maple and walnut, and 4" Western Red Cedar, and the saw/saw blade handles it well.4. Centering the blade is very easy with a handy knob that can be turned to adjust the blade and then locked in place.5. Set-up was straight-forward and fairly easy.6. Access to the blade and wheels is easy via the pop-open doors.Overall, I am very satisfied with this band saw. I would buy it again, and would recommend it to my friends.

4Great saw!
By Benedek Custom Cabinets
I just purchased the saw 2 weeks ago.So far i was used 500 bdft of hard maple lumber on the machine .It is a great saw , fast and really powerfull. The kick-back safety works really good, but i wish for more safety .It is scary when the machine is kicking back the lumber/ so far 5 times/ .The laser works really good , only problem with that it looks really cheap + the stand color not even close with the machine color, looks almost like a aftermarket pcs/ for $800 is expensive /.The glue line?5` panels i can glue up with out problem .I wish to have this saw long time ago , the work is much-much faster, safer .I think for this money is a good buy .

4Combo mill lathe
By Ross N. Binnie
Almost 40 years ago it was my job to write a technical description of a small Chinese lathe that my employer wanted to offer for sale. I was impressed with the technical skill and workmanship of that first Chinese machine tool offered in North America. Now I am the owner of a shiny new Chinese combo lathe / mill from Grizzly. My new machine arrived with much more than was advertised. It has a quick change lathe spindle nose instead of the far more common bolt on style chuck mount.Included with the lathe was a 3 jaw & 4 jaw chuck plus a face plate whereas most of the similar small lathes offered today come with one bolt on 3 jaw chuck. To round out the chucks there was also a face plate! When I dug a bit deeper into the lathe accessories I also found a quick change tool post. The tool carriers are grooved for boring bars too.Although this is a small hobby lathe the tool system can accommodate 1/2" square tools. When I setup the mill I found it was equipped with a quick change Colet set and a milling vice too!Does this machine have any down sides? Yes. Are they major? Well, not exactly. The G0516 is not a geared head lathe. It requires shifting the V belt for spindle speed changes. The new belt is really tight and hard to shift from one groove to the next. Back gearing is by a cogged belt, no gear changes on the spindle.Feed changes and thread cutting requires mounting different gears. Some of the gear changes provide a bit of a challenge. Thread cutting to a shoulder requires skill and patience (there is no thread dial or spindle brake). From the very first lathes with automatic feeds/ thread cutting, fitting of the shaft support has been a challenge for the machine fitters. My machine is no exception, the shaft support is misaligned. Winding the carriage to the far right causes the feed screw to bind in the half nut base. The milling head and column are well made and run well. Removing the installed drill chuck required the application of brute force. Seems this is not unusual, someone else wailed about the problem of removing the drill chuck in another forum. Anyone wishing to precision bore a deep hole would be wise to carry out a careful perpendicular alignment of the milling column. My machine has no indication of any alignment checks by the builder and there is no accuracy certificate with the machine.Overall I am pleased with the design and craftsmanship of this hobby machine.I feel it is well worth the modest cost. One word of caution. This is a heavy piece of equipment. It requires care and forethought before attempting to move it from the solid wood crate to a final resting place. It also needs to be bolted down, albeit the maker has neglected to provide bolt down dimensions!. I used a chain hoist , wood wedges and a counter balance cable between the hoist chain and the end of the lathe bed to keep things on a even keel while hoisting.I know I will have many hours of pleasure from my new toy!

First I want to say I am fairly new to lathe and mill working. I took a couple classes at the local community college and have worked on a mill and lathe for my work for about 6 months. I quit that job for a higher paying job and didn't have access to machines at my new job. I have also wanted to start doing work on my guns so I have been looking for a little lathe and mill to do this on for about a year. Finally I got the money together to buy this combo. Now let me admit that changing the gears and belts is a pain and changing from the lathe to the mill isn't fast BUT it is what you pay for. The machine as a whole is great. I have only done a few things with it and I am not in a hurry so I take my time and the machine gets it done. Small cuts and the finish is great. The next thing I noticed when I unpacked the machine was all the boxes that come with it. You Get a 3 jaw chuck, 4 jaw chuck, face plate, turret tool holder, quick change tool holder, Collet chuck for the mill and collets, milling vice, and mill table. The only thing you need to buy extra is cutters. Finally let me say this is a great combo for the money and if you do get tiered of changing from the lathe to the mill you can get a table to mount the mill on so you will have two seperate machines. This is a great buy and would buy it again in a minute. I do not write revews very often but when I am really impressed so this is a big compliment from me to grizzly. Thanks
