Accurate saw with some minor nuisances

I found the Makita LS1221 to be very accurate and powerful. The miter table to the base were near perfect alignment and the fences were very square to the table. The saw is in no way flimsy. Adjusting the bevel and the miter angles are fairly easy. The miter gage is very easy to read. The bevel gage however does not offer enough contrast, especially after the smallest amount of saw dust gathers on it. The lever for locking the bevel gage should be in the front of the saw. The motor makes an annoying sound when it is first started and is positioned directly on the right side of the saw making it difficult to see what you are cutting as the cut proceeds through the wood. Changing the blade is very difficult because there is no way to support the blade fence out of the way to clear the arbor nut.This however, should not be a problem for anyone who has three hands.

I've had my Makita LS1221 miter saw for almost a year now. To say the least, I am very happy with my purchase. The cut was perfect, right out of the box, and continues to be so even now. The blade was a better quality than what I thought would be on it and it still gives me the cleanest miter cuts I've ever seen. This saw is smooth and powerful enough to go through any of the hardwoods I use. My only regret is that I didn't spend the extra money and purchase the LS1212 (sliding compound).

Long term performer

I have been working with this saw for seven years. It works better than any other 12" compound miter that I have used. For baseboard, casing and crown it is a production workhorse. Simple to use, light and easy to set up. Cuts great, strong motor, and accurate. Its great for framing, remodeling, decks, siding and trim. If you have to cut a lot of shelving for closets and cabinets, or build a lot of stairs, then a slider is a better choice. For everyone else this is the saw to get.

Machine came set-up within tolerance good to go, I cleaned the packing grease off and started work (about a week now) all is well as of 08/15/06. If I have more to add later, I will edit this review and report my findings. So far, very good.It's important to note that you need to really clean the packing grease everywhere off the machine. If you leave any kind of residue, it will collect the fine dust and cause drag on the work going through the machine.

Hospital Quality

This is a heavy-duty, high quality piece of equipment for a rock bottom price. The floor base is very heavy. It consists of two separate square bars with wheels on either end, joined together in an "X" and held together by a steel bolt and washer. The bolt screws into a pole, where the lamp arm is inserted. The only parts that will need to be (eventually) replaced are a fuse and the lamp itself. The only tool you may need to put this together is a wrench for the bolt. I also recommend buying "3M Compressed Air Dust Remover" to clean the lens. This will allow you to avoid scratching the lens unnecessarily, as well as avoid lint buildup. If you do clean the lens with a cloth, make sure it is lint-free.The swing arm lamp/magnifier will stay where you put it. It is not going to move. Period. This is not a plastic piece of junk from a box-mart store. This equipment will last for years. I ordered it to do cross-stitching. I could not be happier. I wish I ordered it sooner. And Grizzly ships very quickly. It got here much sooner then expected. Be warned: The box is very heavy, and may take two people to lift. (If you do not want a floor model, take a look at their table model with a heavy base).

OK, but not as good as the first review!

Description of the lampThe base is folded sheet metal tube with metal bars in it to give it weight(Total weight of the lamp is 24lbs.) The plastic end caps all fell off during shipping and would only stay on with glue. The wheels are 100%plastic. The base is tube metal and at the top of the base is a plastic bushing. The tube is secured to the base with a bolt and washer. I used threadlock on the bolt because it WILL work loose if you do not. The top section (the metal box that the power cord comes out of and up) slides into the plastic bushing. The bushing is the weak point to the whole unit. The bushing is too short and the hole is too big so the top tilts to one side slightly (1-2"). A concern of mine is if you were holding it by the top section and lifted up accidently, you could lift the top section out of the bushing and then the heavy lens section makes it top heavy and you could loose your grip on it. The lens focus range is 6" to 12". The lamp provide good even lighting.Pros:1. It is stable even with the lamp extended out.2. Good even light on subject.3. Able to adjust to most angles.Neegatives:1. Another made in China lamp.2. The top section can come out of the base. needs a retaining clip!3. The bushing is poorly made. I will be making a new one on my lathe!Summary: You get what you pay for. for the price, it is acceptable. I will be using this in my shop and moving it around daily so I am going to modify the bushing. If you are going to set this up and not move the base around a lot the you should not have any problem with the bushing. Overall I am pleased with it and with a minor bushing modification, it should last a long time.

I'm glad they have this available. I sew and when I sew I need to see clearly. This helps a lot!Also, I collect charms when I travel. Trying to put the charms on a bracelet or necklace, you need to see up close and make sure you get the charm exactly where it has to go.This product is excellent! I do a lot of projects where I need light, a magnifier, and something close.I can even sit comfortably on the bed and do my work!

Well made, economically priced tool.

I have had a few lesser expensive tap and die sets before, and none have looked as nice or performed as well as this one. I splurged on this set as opposed to the 76 piece set because this has many more drill bits and bit extractors. The quality in the materials and crafstmanship is top notch, it all came in a well constructed carrying case. This is a very comprehensive set that covers most any size you would ever need. I have a Honda motorcycle, Arctic Cat ATV, GM truck, and a VW Jetta and I double checked most all of the bolts on those vehicles and this kit has me pretty well covered. There is nothing worse than getting most of the way through a project and needing a tool to finish. We have all been there and this is the kit that will get you out of alot of jams with stripped bolt/nuts and broken off bolts.I found Amazon's prices to be the best around, although sometimes they say something is "in stock" and it doesn't ship for a week. Is it in stock or is it not Amazon? overall Amazon has good prices and I have always gotten my items, it is just a bit of a shipping delay sometimes.

Nice set at a reasonable price. I bought this after pricing individual pieces I needed for a job I was doing. The whole set is the same price as a few pieces at the local big-box store. It has everything I need for working on a couple old cars and jobs around the house. The case is nice for organization. The quality seems to be excellent, and the tools have cut threads easily on everything I've used them on. I think this is one of those things that you buy once and use forever.

OK for the money

Don't expect a Pexto for the price. Expect adequate. Expect to have to make some minor adjustments. Expect some crooked parts. Expect to have to do some clean up of gloppy finish and rough edges in the bending area.The biggest issues are with getting the thing.A standard pallet jack will not fit under the crate without getting back and taking a run at it. This makes it very difficult to handle inside the delivery truck and on the ground.Be SURE to be fussy about the condition of things before the delivery driver leaves and don't let him or her decide anything for you. Remember that you can refuse delivery. If there is significant damage, refusal makes things easier for you and for Grizzly. You can open the crate by removing the two straps and just a few nails at the bottom of the long sides and lifting off the main box.To Grizzly's credit, ALL of their people I have dealt with whether in a showroom or on the phone or through email have been friendly and have meant well and acted concerned even if they might not have been able to deal with an issue like the flimsy crates.Expect to end up thinking "at least it was cheap."

I like it a lot

I initially was searching on Ebay for a Whitney 48 inch brake like the one we had in our shop and was surprised to see the resale value. Turned my attention to this one and bit the bullet and ordered. This one blows the Whitney out of the water. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. Delivery was prompt. Crate fell apart trying to get it off the truck, but it was in good shape. It was worth 60 bucks to me to have a couple of guys handy to unload it and take to my basement shop.

Works in a 14" Craftsman bandsaw

Easy installation and perfect fit in a 14" Craftsman bandsaw. It is not, however, color matched, except probably to a green Grizzly bandsaw, but does anyone really care? This riser block will probably fit other Taiwan imports. Well packed and shipped immediately by Grizzly. If you need to bump up the resaw capacity to 12" this is the perfect solution for not a whole lot of money. Best to buy this before stocking up on additional blades as this modification will make the original 93 1/2" ones obsolete, requiring 105" blades instead. This kit does ship with one OEM quality blade to get you started.

I looked at the casting on my Grizzly G0555 bandsaw and was suprised it was identical to the older Jet 14" saw. Don't get me wrong, I am very pleased with my Grizzly, and will use it for most of my work. The Jet is set up for dedicated resaw work. This extension is well worth the money.
