5Apple is getting it right!
By Joseph Patrick Breda
First, let me provide a bit of background. I have been a computer nut for about 25 years. I started banging out Basic programs on the original Commodor PET in elementary school. Since then, I have suffered the irresitable compulsion to purchase every "next great computer" offered. I have been through TRS-80s, Ataris, Amigas, Apples, and of course, many ubiquitous "PCs."

I had strayed from Apple since owning a Color Classic in 1993 until 2001. At that time, the new Apple Cube caught my eye, as well as the beta version of OS X. I love the FreeBSD operating system, and was very excited about running a Unix distribution on a well-integrated consumer desktop. Alas, I must admit I was disappointed. The original OSX was far to slow for any reasonable work. Worse yet, it lacked the support to allow me to do simple tasks "what do you mean I can't play DVDs and my printer isn't supported?!?!" Nevertheless, I decided to try to stick with it. I sold the Cube and bought a DP 533 and 17 Studio display. Better performance, but still many nagging problems doing things that were a snap on a garden variety PC. I sold the DP 533, and bought two more PCs in the following two years.

My last system was a AMD XP 2800+, DVD-R, 1 GB of ram and a 19" LCD. Performance was satisfactory expect for three things (1) the system was unacceptably loud for my home office, (2) it was nearly impossible to create a decent DVD despite trying a number of software packages (I have a two year-old daughter and new son on the way--lots of video), and (3) I HATE WINDOWS. The system required constant tweaking and chasing down glitches.

Finally, I broke down, sold the PC and bought a 20" iMac. Unlike my experience two years ago, I am happy to report that Apple has got it right. The system works as advertised. The machine is quiet, well designed, and beautiful (had to mention that in any discussion of a mac). As a bonus, the system came with a suite of applications that cover almost every common task, often much more smoothly then their Windows counterparts. (Quicken, AppleWorks,iTunes, iPhoto, iEtc...) Add to that the huge collection of open source unix-based software available for free and you will find you need to buy very little additional software.

While I was concerned about the speed of a 1.25GHZ G4 vs. my PC juggernaut, this was unwarranted. I am sure in pure processing speed, my new mac is not as fast. However, I have no complaints about speed and responsiveness when editing video, developing java applications on Netbeans, or playing the occasional game. The large screen makes it easy to juggle many windows, and Safari offers the best web browsing experience I have seen to date. I would recommend that you order your iMac with the 160GB drive and at least 512MB of memory for best performance.

I find the 20" iMac to provide a very enjoyable overall computing experience. One caveat -- I would make sure your essential applications and peripherals will work with the machine. There are still some voids in hardware support, but not nearly what it was two years ago. Check out Apple's excellent web site for more information. If the 20" iMac fits the bill in that regard, go for it, it is an excellent machine.

5Powerful, user-friendly computer with big wide screen.
By D. R. Schryer
Apple is quite simply the best and most innovative computer manufacturer. Their various Macintosh computers are very user-friendly: easy to set up and use and (unlike most PCs) seldom crash or malfunction. Furthermore, the new iMac computers, although full-featured, are very compact and, thus, take up little desk space. The new iMacs all have adjustable flat-panel displays with exceptionally bright, sharp images. Now Apple has increased the processor speeds of these strikingly-attractive new iMacs and reduced their prices. This model has a big 20" wide screen display plus a 1.25 GHz G4 processor. Please don't be put off by the fact that the processor clock-speed is "only" 1.25 GHz. The G4 processor accomplishes more than twice as much per clock cycle as Pentium 4s do and, thus, is faster than a 2.5 GHz Pentium 4. All things considered, this new iMac is a terrific, versatile wide screen computer at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

5Not perfect, but still better than any PC
By A. Butterfield
This is my first Mac of any kind. I had high expectations, especially considering the price. So I was a little disappointed to find that the screen was lop sided. Only a little, but very noticeable. There was also a stuck pixel.I decided to live with these (no choice in the case of the stuck pixel) and soon learned to ignore them and concentrate on the good points.Panther is such a pleasure to use after using Windows. I quickly started to wonder why anybody would buy a Windows machine. Panther is so slick, and the iLife programs are everything Apple claim they are. Connecting to broadband was easy through the buillt-in ethernet. The 20 inch screen, lop-sided-ness and stuck pixel aside was worth the extra, just about. All other screens seem small to me now.Three months' use has thrown up a few points. There aren't enough powered USB ports. The supplied mouse is possibly the worst I've ever used and the keyboard isn't much better. That's a shame, because I'm going to have to replace them with ones that work properly and that'll ruin the look of the machine.Unfortunately, my iMac, three months old, had to go into the repair shop with a misbehaving superdrive mechanism that turned out to be a very minor software glitch. Apple Care (I paid extra for the three years) was a HUGE disappointment. They had no idea how to fix the problem (they should have suggested a very simple fix which would've meant I didn't have to pack it off to the service centre), were the epitomy of the helpline pits, and now I appreciate why PC manufacturers offer on-site repairs: apart from the fact that it's a pain in the neck taking your computer to be repaired, do you really want some repair shop having access to your files? At least they fixed the lop-sided screen while they looked at the superdrive, but I think the lack of on-site service is a major drawback to Apple ownership.Oh dear, the shine has been well and truly taken off this machine for me. At this price, I think I have every right to be disappointed. But still, now it's back home, and I've forgiven it. The honeymoon is definitely over, but I think the marriage will be pretty solid.

5THE FINEST DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR VALUE AROUND
By M. Lies
I have owned the BIC America DV64 speakers for 3+ years. My previous speakers were the Electro-voice interface A. These were the first computor designed speakers using a passive radiator instead of a tuned port. As these aged I was unable to get replacement drivers and they began to loose quality. Anyone who remembers these speakers will remember the accolades they recieved from all of the audiopole mag's for their brilliant clarity and astounding tight, smooth and resonant deep bass. As a professional classical musician for more than 45 years I was desparate to find replacements with the same qualities (given good source material) of accurate instrument timbre, smooth frequency response, tight bass, good high frequency dispersion, and proper instrument orchestral placement in the stereo imaging including apparent front to back imaging. Piano is one of the harder instruments to reproduce. The DV64's present you with the crisp clarity Of the hammer stricking the string of a fine Steinway including the shimmer of all the overtones. Of all the speakers out there a few met these criteria but fell in the $2K to $3K a pair range. When I heard the DV64's I was blown away with the quality at a price level that usually goes along with boomy, screechy, junk. I have never regretted my decision. These are truly musical speakers.

5Amazing Value
By P. Trenda
These are amazing speakers for the money. I bought these after extensive research, and against my better judgement, bought them without listening to them first. I replaced my 25-year-old Realistic Optimus speakers with these, apprehensive about keeping the deep bass sound that I've so enjoyed with the old speakers. My fears were quickly replaced by a sense of awe with the new BIC's - simply astounding sound that made my old speakers sound, well, old. The bass response is stunning, the highs are crisp and clean, and my buddy with the Paradynes (sp?) was impressed enough to say that my theater surround system (all BIC's) put his in the dust. I ran these speakers through their paces with 2-channel audio (Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Miles Davis, FM radio jazz and classic rock), as well as 7.1 surround with concert DVD's (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rush, Neil Young, and the Blue Man Group), and standard movie DVD's (Saving Private Ryan, Lord of the Rings, We Were Soldiers), and can honestly say that these BIC speakers are the best value speakers I have ever heard. My pal with the Paradynes paid more than double what I paid for his speaker system, and he likes mine better. Do yourself a favor, and buy anything from the BIC America line - you will be glad you did.

5Pleasantly Surprised
By Goober22
Like a lot of the reviews posted by others, I was a bit hesitant to make the purchase of BIC's DV64 towers. The high reviews versus the low price threw me off a bit. I mean how could such a highly rated product sell for so cheap? I still don't know the answer to that question, but I can tell you that these speakers deliver better than I could have ever imagined. Absolutely superb sounding. Though a tad "bright" right out of the box, a couple of adjustments at the receiver made the difference (speakers set to small and crossed to 80hz). These speakers exceeded my expectations all the way around. The cabinets are heavy and solid. The speaker covers are really solid and stretched tightly with high quality mesh. Crisp, punchy, and warm smooth bass. As I have often heard, the speakers get better with play (50 hr. break-in). I purchased a pair of these speakers along with the BIC F12 powered sub-woofer. UNBELIEVABLE! I paid $122 per speaker, but they are worth MUCH more. Great for music or movies.

3Great printer, but BEWARE OF SOFTWARE INSTALLATION!
By HLC Technical Services
I've had numerous P-Touch models over the years, and I think the output they produce is superb. The software for the Mac, on the other hand, has lagged far behind its Windows counterpart. Older versions of the software, in particular, had problems with anything except TrueType fonts. Now I see that Brother finally released version 5 of the software for OS X. I downloaded it and was pleasantly surprised to see that it had an entirely different, more Mac-like interface, and it handled all of my fonts just fine. I was quite pleased until I tried to use some of my OTHER programs. It seems that if you uninstall the older version of the software before installing this one--something Brother tells you to do in the instructions--IT WILL WIPE OUT FILES USED BY OTHER PROGRAMS! So far the uninstaller has trashed Office 2008, Acrobat Pro, Adobe Reader, iWork '08, Adobe Creative Suite CS3 and OmniOutliner. It's hard to tell what others might be affected as well. I ended up having to do a clean reinstall of my system, which was NOT a small task. So, buy the printer if you like, but BEWARE the uninstaller!

5Well engineered product with a reasonable price tag
By Benjamin
This label printer produces professional quality labels with ease. I was printing great looking lables for electronic equipment within 30 min of receiving the box. I use the the black on silver, 0.75" double strength tape and the black on white, 0.25", double-strength tape.I did buy a Zebra 300 series before for twice the price of the PT9500PC but it took weeks until I was able to print labels due to mis-alignment issues and ribbon peeling off or not sticking to the labels. Great product, highly recommended.

4Excellent Label Printer, Good Software for Mac
By Quazar
I received my Brother PT-9500PC Label Printer just over a week ago. Setup was very easy on my Macintosh. Rather than using the software on the provided disk, I downloaded the latest software and drivers from the Brother website and was up and running in minutes. I did have problems getting it to work when attached to a USB hub, but that could have been a problem with the hub rather than the printer. Once I plugged it directly into the computer, all was well. [edit: That hub has since been found to be defective]Full version info, for those interested:* Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Build 9G55)* P-touch Editor 5.0 (Version 5.0.017)* PT-9500PC Driver (Version 2.0.1)The print quality of the labels is excellent. This is a 360 DPI printer, so it has a resolution similar to the early laser printers. Curves and edges appear rounded and smooth. You can see the pixels if you look really close, but print quality looks fine for most purposes. This means that you can use interesting fonts, including fonts with fairly thin lines if you want. Print speed is very good, and the printer can cut the tape completely between each label, or just score the label and leave the backing paper connected - this makes it easy to peel off the next sticker when printing a string of labels. The software is much better than I was expecting - labeling software is often fairly lame. P-touch Editor 5.0 is a well put-together and professional looking software package. I haven't yet used all the features, such as auto-increment and bar-codes, but just from experimentation, those features appear to be easy to get to and use. One random note, though: I haven't found a way to rotate text to arbitrary angles (I was trying to place text diagonally). I assume I could do this in another software package and just import it as a picture, but I haven't tried. The only reason I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5: The maximum print width is 27.1mm (just over 1"). This means that on the 1.5" labels, you get about 0.2" margins at the edges of the tape whether you want them or not. With smaller tape sizes, you can print to within 0.04" of the edge. This may or may not be an issue for you, but it is a fact that is buried in the tech specs. While it is true that it can print on all the listed tape sizes up to 1.5", it can't print near the edges of the 1.5" tape like it can on the narrower tapes. All in all, I'm very happy with this product and I expect it to provide a long useful life just like my hand-held Brother P-touch labeler.

5Good sounding sub
By T. McRae
Bought this sub about 2 years ago and built a subwoofer for my home theater system. This speaker does a great job and hits pretty hard. The speaker is hooked up to a 200 watt single channel amp and handles anything i could throw at it and a whole lot more. My wife gets on to me a lot because of how much it rattles the house! Would recommend this speaker to anyone!
