Very Nice Scope

This 8" SCT is a very good scope for the $ without jumping into the low $2k price tag. I suggest you purchase some castors or a roll around dolly they sell for these as the CG-5 mount is heavy duty and the scope and mount are not easily carried around. Great for astrophotography because of the GEM mount but be prepared to spend about another $1000 when it is all said and done on narrowband filters for nebula viewing, filter wheel as well as guidescope and auto guider. This expense of course doesn't count a DSLR camera which is really needed for some long exposure shots to really pull in the detail on planets and some deeper space objects.Not a big deal but if I had to complain it wouldn't be on the scope itself but rather with the CG-5 mount motors. They are kind of noisy when slewing but once property polar aligned this scope does do a nice job finding objects.As well, if you try to upgrade the firmware for the hand control or the motor controllers, forget USB to serial adapters. The link is just too unstable. I as well as many others in the blogs couldn't get it to work properly leaving us with a failed firmware flash midway through the upgrade. Lucky for me I had a older desktop computer which I simply ordered a proper serial card and the upgrades were then successful without any issues. I read on the blogs if you don't have an older computer for the installation of a proper serial card, the PCMI to serial adaptor provides a stable and more successful connection than the USB to serial does. I don't understand in a world of USB 2.0 now the standard why they wouldn't go ahead and make usb 2.0 the standard for communicaton of firmware upgrades as well as control of the scope itself instead of the older serial connection to RS232. This scope works great with a free program for controling your scope from a computer called Stellarium. Again, you will need a successful serial connection though in order to do this.I would also suggest you purchase the GPS accessory which really makes it nice to automatically pull in current date/time/position etc. This scope really looks good with the guidescope mounted and autoguider which mounts easily with a dovetail plate mounted on top. You will need another counterweight as well in order to balance out the additonal weight you add to the top of this scope.

Celestron C8SGT Review

I received the telescope and was able to get it assembled and running pretty quickly. Being new to astronomy, it was a little time consuming to figure out how to polar align the base before you can do star alignment. Once I figured this out, I can polar and star align the telescope in 10 minutes.The Scope and mount both work very well, I've had a few clear nights and was able to see some Clusters, and Nebula's. Saturn looks great!! Due to light pollution in my area, and hot summer nights, I've been limited to how much I can see.I plan on upgrading the eyepieces for this scope, and get a few filters.The scope and mount is worth the price.
