4Nice lathe with good support from Grizzly
By Robotster
I have been interested in buying a lathe for hobby work and have done research and talked to people about their experiences. I was convinced that the Grizzly was the best choice for a few reasons. Basically, the level of quality in all of the lathes in this category is about the same since they are all manufactured in China by just a couple of manufacturers, so this was a wash in terms of which brand to choose. It came down to features, included accessories and convenience. The desirable features on this unit were the wider bed for work on longer pieces and the variable speed motor control. Being new to a tool like this, the fact that different materials require different cutting speeds would require gear changes on lathes without the speed adjustment. The ability to slowly bring a piece of work up to the proper speed is also important to a novice (like me) to determine if the work is mounted and centered properly on the chuck. The Grizzly box arrived in pristine condition, but that did not indicate a damage free shipment as the drip tray was bent in shipment. One call to the customer service group at Grizzly solved this by way of a new tray sent to arrive in just a couple of days. Nice, helpful people at Grizzly - this will be a strong point the next time I shop for a tool. I have turned a few items on the lathe already, and all seems fine. The slides have very little play and the chuck centers properly with almost no run-out. If you are new to this hobby, you will find the web site very helpful. They have an abundance of great info for the beginner and intermediate machinist. The fact that they had an in depth review and adjustment and set up pointers specifically for this lathe really made my selection a lot easier. Be ready to buy additional accessories to get up and running. A live center and a steady rest were included, but cutting tools and a Jacobs chuck are required items not included in the box.

5Best Mini Lathe For The Money
By FarmGirl
I bought one of these mini lathe to convert over to CNC. I own a small machine shop and looking to get my feet wet with CNC and the mini lathe and mill is a good place to start. All my equipment is Grizzly so I'm familar with their excellent technical support and how they stand behind all their machines and make it easy to buy replacement parts from their website.LittleMachineShop provides excellent upgrades for this lathe and CNCFusion provides a decent CNC conversion kit.The first thing most people should upgrade to make this lathe highly accurate is to remove the radial spindle bearings and replace them with tapered roller bearings that LittleMachienShop sells. Once upgraded, the spindle run-out is less the 0.0003" which is as good as any larger sized lathe costing $1000's more.My advice when you first get this lathe is to take it completely apart to clean all the wax sealant off it and grease the spindle gearbox and oil the ways. SwarfRat sells a DVD that shows how to disassemble and reassemble the mini lathe and mill and is a must have tool for maintaining your machine(s). If your just learning, they also sell DVD's that teach you how to properly use your new metalworking machines. Your new machine won't come ready to use out of the box so setting it up correctly is half the battle to achieving great results.

4Nice mini metal lathe
By David G. Yan
I just go one os these and I love it. Couple of things I found to be unexpected: (1) It's made in China I had expected to be made in USa since it's grizzly. (2) The threading gears are made of plastic along with some of the gears in the head housing. Other than that it run smooth and quiet.

5Upgrading My Delta X5 V-Speed Drill
By Marv Kratky
This chuck should be standard equipment on this drill. I don't have any problem with bit slippage as I did with the standard chuck. Although the chuck is a little too big for the mortis attachment I still gave it 5 stars.

5Good chuck for the money
By dpgrand
I put this on a 1930's Buffalo drill press that still had the original chuck on it. It's not as fancy as some of the newer keyless designs, but you can't go wrong with Jacobs.

4The best computer I've ever owned
By Zach Everson
I bought a 12-inch Powerbook after I gave my old Sony Vaio notebook the Pete Townshend treatment - I put my fist through it. (Yes, it looks like a stained glass window.) I hadn't used a Mac in years, but I decided I'd had it with Microsoft and Windows. All it took was one weekend and a good book - "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual," by David Pogue -however, and I mastered the machine.

SOFTWAREThe computer comes with some great software. iTunes is the best media player on the market. I have almost 5,000 songs stored on mine. With the search function and browser display, it is easy to find a particular song. iTunes also keeps track of the number of times you've listened to a song and it allows you to rate your songs. It's easy to create a playlist. Also, burning one of those playlists onto a CD can be done with one click.

Safari is a great web browser. It has a Google search box built into the toolbar, prevents pop-up ads (I've never had one), has tabbed browsing (preventing a cluttered desktop), and allows for bookmarks to be added with one click.

iChat allows Mac users to customize their AIM and Rendezvous chat sessions in ways that the normal applications don't allow, such as adding pictures from iPhoto to their profile.

I haven't mastered iPhoto yet, but it is downloading pictures from a digital camera is as easy as plugging it into the USB port and clicking a button.

Also, Macs are less likely to get a virus or be overtaken by spyware.

The iCal and Address Book look good, but if you are going to sync a PDA with your Mac, you are better off using Palm Desktop software. Hopefully the functionality of those programs will be improved in the future though.

Finally, most of the programs work with each other. For example, if someone on my iChat buddy list is online, a green dot will appear next to a message from him or her in my Mail inbox.

I also use Microsoft Office, Quicken, Dreamweaver MX, and Palm Desktop - they all work well on the Mac. Office shares files perfectly with PCs.

HARDWARESpend the money and get the superdrive (CD-RW/DVD-R). DVDs have more memory than CDs and blank DVD-Rs are becoming more affordable. If you are into collecting videos of concerts, a DVD-R is a must.

I'd recommend upgrading to at least 768 MB of memory and the 80 GB hard drive. Burning a DVD requires a lot of memory and can take a while - this way you can use other applications while burning a DVD (on my old PC, if I was burning a CD, I couldn't use anything else). The hard drive space is really cheap. Plus, if you load your CDs on your computer, they can eat up a lot of memory, even as MP3s (my 5,000 songs take up about 25 GB).

Also, there is a lot to be said for getting the Airport Exteme card (although you can buy a third-party base station for less). I am able to browse the Internet in any room of my house - well worth the extra $100 or so.

I have the 12-inch monitor, but that was because Apple hadn't released the 15-inch in the new style when I made my purchase. The 12-inch is fine - it's much clearer than my old PC notebook - but if I had the opportunity, I'd probably go with the bigger monitor.

DRAWBACKS-While most software is available for Mac OS X, there are some programs that aren't (Google toolbar, Yahoo! toolbar, Kazaa, AvantGo) or minor problems in software that is available (Quicken can't access accounts on Ameritrade via Macs)-The PowerBook doesn't have a fan, which is great for the battery, but can cause it to get a bit hot underneath where the user rests his left hand.

Regardless of those drawbacks, however, buying a Mac was an easy decision. If you have any questions about it, click on my profile and send me a e-mail.

UPDATE: After 14 months, the hard drive started making noise and system performance got slow and I couldn't run as many programs as I used to. I called Apple and had to spend $300 for them to put in a new hard drive and some other hardware. They were unable to transfer my data to my new hard drive, so I've spent the past four days reloading all of my software and applications. No idea why the hard drive went. Hence I dropped the rating from five stars to four.

5Great little laptop
By A Customer
Finally retired my Sony Vaio (850Mhz) and made the switch to a powerbook--wanted to do that ever since I realized that Mac OS X is pretty much BSD Unix with a killer desktop. What a great machine this is. Much better than the comparable IBook...twice the processor cache for starters...and none of the problems that have plagued the 1Gz iBook. Weighs just 4.6 pounds and is very portable...aluminium case is very scratch resistant. I get GREAT range with the add-on Airport Extreme card going to a LinkSys 11g access point (there's an antenna in the lid of the unit). I'm very happy with the battery life, the operating system, and the apps I use on this machine (Office X mostly). About a month after getting and using this machine I got a G5 for my desktop and I'm quite happy. If you're looking for a gaming rig, forget Apple but if you're looking for a business-oriented machine that fits in very smoothly with a PC-based office, this is the ticket. Networks much easier than a Windows machine!

5nice refinements
By A Customer
This is a wonderful little machine. Very speedy and the keyboard is absolutely fantastic. The build quality is excellent and the aluminum casing exudes class. Compared to the first 12-inch PowerBook, it runs cooler and is quite a bit snappier. Plus it supports DVI out and USB 2.

That said, its battery life and Airport range are not quite as good as an iBook's. So unless you're going to do a lot of serious video/graphics work, you may want to consider one of the new G4 iBooks -- they're great machines for the price.

Really, you can't go wrong either way, depending on your needs.

5Not water PROOF, but they don't claim that.
By D. Gould
I have just purchased a second one of these (jumbo model) from Amazon; I've owned another one for 10 years. These are really well made, bullet proof bags that will keep all your stuff dry unless you submerge the entire bag in water. These bags don't have a stiff shape, so you can load them with tons of stuff. The seams are all completely watertight, and the only way water can get in is through the top zipper, which is protected by a large Velcro flap that covers the zipper, so even in driving rain, it stays dry inside. I have looked out the window of an airplane and seen my bag sitting in the rain on the tarmac, and I know my clothes will be dry when I get to the luggage carousel. There are no dividers, no pockets, no key loops of other gadgets inside; just a giant canyon of dry storage. The bottom isn't stiff either, so when you lift from the supplied shoulder strap, the bag will tend to fold or bend a little in the middle. I usually carry the bag with the handles so it's not an issue. I have loaded it with over 50# of stuff without a problem. It will carry heavy clothes, boots, camping gear etc. After 10 years of use in airports, buses and boats, my old bag is still going strong. Highly recommended.

2Weak Handles
By Cheryl L. Schachter
Although, I love the bag itself but I was so sad when only a week after being used I tugged on the handle and the plastic joiner snapped. Grrrr. I bought four carabiners to replace the flimsy plastic pieces.

5Great Bag
By DJ
My wife and I typically travel to the coast 6 times a year and the majority of our luggage ends up in the bed of the pick-up for the trip over. After driving through rain in the past we both tired of having to dry our clothes when we reached our destination. I researched several options and finally decided on the Seattle Sports Downstream Duffle Bag (Large) and bought two. What a great product. You can fill them with enough clothes and accessories for a week. They are very well made with heavy vinyl material and should last many years. No doubt they will pass the "rain" test and one of the best attributes is that they are made here in the USA.! I highly recommend them.

3Good Computer, but Caution on Vendor!
By Tech Exec
Overall, I find the Suunto Vyper to be a good computer, reasonably priced. As others said, the documentation isn't too good, but after a few minutes of playing with the Vyper it is pretty easy to follow.Prospective purchasers should however be aware that Leisure Pro is NOT an authorized US vendor for Suunto products and the product you receive is a grey market model, typically from another company. This is one reason that you'll often get it in non-English manuals (mine came in German). The product is NOT eligible for the US warranty, although Leisure Pro offers their own warranty. You'll also likely find the computer comes reading out in meters and not in imperial units (feet), and that the manual doesn't tell you how to switch units. It's in the menus on the computer, but you'll have to discover it since it isn't in the US manual. It is disappointing that Amazon does not point out any of this information on the product and thus misrepresents that you're purchasing from an authorized dealer with full manufacturer's warranty.

5Excellent computer for what it does
By Brian J
I have had the Vyper for a few years now, and my only complaint is that it does not allow the use of multiple gases during a dive. The display is laid out well and easy to view underwater, and I like it a lot better than the Oceanic Data Plus I used to have. On the surface you can easily review your dives or check O2/no deco limits for another dive. Of course, with the computer you do not use repetitive dive tables. The Suunto dive manager software is a decent logbook and, if you provide a cylinder size and pressures before and after the dive, it will calculate your SAC rate. With the optional download cable you can view your dive profile on a computer afterwards. The computer has a personal adjustment to make the algorithm more conservative if you are in a situation that increases DCS risk.I would recommend this for all divers except serious technical divers. You can check out the manual and try a simulator at the Suunto website.

4Works great, but doesn't calculate required surface interval
By M. Harbut
This is my first dive computer, so perhaps my expectations were high in thinking it would calculate the necessary surface intervals between dives. In fact, it only measures the amount of surface time between dives -- you still need to figure out your ending pressure group, etc.I just bought this computer less than a month ago and recently used it during a dive vacation in Bonaire. For what it does, it does quite well. I used it on the air-only setting, and used the max depth and timed dive alarms, both of which worked quite well. I took it on a night dive and found the backlight not as necessary as anticipated because you can just shine the light onto your computer. The documentation leaves a lot to be desired. First of all, the computers (I bought two at the same time) came only with manuals in French and Spanish. The English manual is available on Suunto's Web site as a PDF, but it was a real pain to print out all 71+ pages and lug them around. The manual isn't written very well either, with about 40% of it comprised of disclaimers, warnings, and other Suunto CYA in ALL CAPS, and the manual unnecessarily refers to the buttons on the computers by function rather than label. For example, why refer to a button as "PLAN" when it's marked as "Mode" on the device? It's better than nothing, I guess. The computer also comes with a handy, if not complicated, waterproof quick reference card. When I got home, I downloaded all my dive info to my laptop pretty effortlessly (the cable and software is sold separately). I'm impressed with the amount of data that is automatically stored. The software even generates a graph of each dive based on your minute-by-minute depth. The software doesn't seem to support multiple profiles, so if you and your dive buddy have the same computer, you'll need to install the software on different machines. All in all, I'd recommend this computer, but I have no other frame of reference since it's my first one. The device works as advertised, but make sure your first few dives with it aren't heavy duty, because you'll be fiddling with it quite a bit no matter how many times you've read the manual.
