Croquet championships were held at Wimbledon England in 1870, seven years before lawn tennis was played there. The SY4 championship set is similar to the London Green set except for the mallets and the storage case and also comes with everything necessary for an official 6-wicket tournament game or the more familiar 9-wicket backyard game. Set includes 4 tournament mallets with 38 inch multi laminated eucalyptus hardwood (32 lams per inch) handles wrapped with perforated leather grips. The mallet heads have inlaid sight lines, added weight and lexan faces on the mallet heads near the points of contact. The 4 tournament weight croquet balls are biaxially milled to make deep diamond grooves on their surfaces; this gives the balls traction to follow a course on grass. Wickets (9) are fashioned from 7/16 inch powdercoated solid steel rod, not from coat hanger wire. They are marked to show how deep to set them into the ground to hold the proper 12 inch vertical clearance when firmly fixed. The 2 wooden stakes used in the nine wicket game to establish the finish and turning points have a detachable black spire to hold the four color coded marker clips used to document the progress of the game. The rubber headed hammer is supplied to fix the pegs, stakes, flags and wickets into the ground since the mallets should never be used for this purpose. The set comes with the official USCA rules for both a 6 and 9 wicket game. The tough corded nylon soft case has a place for everything and everything is held in place by special straps and compartments. Has both handles and a shoulder strap for carrying. Hand made in India.

Best Croquet Set for this Price

I manage a beach property in Texas that has paying guests. For 30 years, this property has provided Croquet to the guests, so over time I have bought a lot of different Croquet sets. I try to buy the best equipment I can, yet stay on budget. The Scotland Yard set is almost an excellent set for the money, yet because of small errors in fit and finish, I would say it is a good set for the money. The Fabric Carry Case is very sturdy, but has small errors inside where some of the straps that hold pegs and such are made too small. The Wickets are very sturdy, with 5 1/2 inch gap. This may be large for the better players, but about right for Recreational games on lawns. The Stakes are very well made. There is a full complement of Flags, Clips, Bisque Pegs, and such, all good quality. The Balls weigh 15.7 oz and are as good or better than you would want for Recreational play on lawns. The Mallets are 3 lb 4.8 oz and not quite up to the standards of the rest of the set. The flat faces of the octagonal Handles are not oriented true to the flat faces of the Mallet Heads. The wrapped Grips are finished with tape that is starting to come off already. Overall, the build quality of the Mallets could be better with just a little care by the maker. As is, Scotland Yard is still a much better buy than other Croquet Sets in this price range.
