Product Description

Orion's Scenix 50mm binoculars offer the superior optical and mechanical quality you'd expect in more expensive binoculars but at a price that won't break the bank. Scenix binoculars incorporate porro prisms made from top-quality BAK-4 optical glass. Moreover, every air-to-glass optical surface is antireflection coated, and the 50mm objective lenses are multi-layer coated for maximum light transmission. In Astronomy magazine's April 2005 review of 10x50 binoculars under $100, the Scenix 10x50 was rated #1! The housings are constructed of sturdy metal, not plastic, and armored with protective rubber for a secure grip. Both modelsl include a vinyl carrying case, lens caps, deluxe wide neck strap, and a threaded socket for an optional tripod L-adapter. Put Scenix to use for stargazing, birdwatching, or any outdoor viewing activity. Two-year limited warranty.

5Good choice for beginning astronomer who wears glasses
By J. Lee
Pros: Great optics at reasonable price, solid construction, long eye relief for eyeglass-wearersCons: 7x50's may be too bulky/heavy for hikers and backpackersThe Orion Scenix 7X50 fits the needs of this beginning astronomer: 1) reasonably priced new at $100 (I bought it as an open-box for $70!); 2) solid build and optics without being too heavy; 3) excellent eye relief. Some folks may feel a 7X50 setup is suboptimal for astronomy, implying that higher mag binoculars would be better. I disagree completely. The 7X50 provides good magnification for the night sky without using a tripod, as the shakiness with higher mag (even 10X) is noticeably worse. And for those who wear eyeglasses with astigmatism and/or a desire to keep them on while viewing, the Scenix 7X50 provides superb eye relief at 20mm -- the 10X50 version has a less desirable eye relief of 12mm.Yes, like any good pair of binoculars, the Scenix 7X50 can be used for excellent terrestrial viewing. But for hikers/backpackers, keep in mind that 7x50 binoculars can be bulky and heavy, even though the 1.8lb weight of this Scenix compares favorably to other 7x50's out there.Overall, the Scenix 7X50 represents a high quality choice for astronomers, especially for a budget-minded beginner.

5Good Binoculars
By paul
I'm a beginner astronomer and wanted to buy something that's portable and lightweight. I've also considered Nikon Action binocular, but opted to get Scenix since they were lighter and also had casing made out of metal vs Action that are heavier and have plastic body. At first I bought 10x50 but these proved to be near impossible to hold steady so I've exchanged them for 7x50 pair. Even under light polluted east coast skies I'm able to see Orion nebula and beehive cluster. Mars and Jupiter are visible as dots, but no detail. Coupled with Android apps such as Skye and Google Maps, as well as Stellarium, I've been making a great progress in learning the night sky. As far as quality of optics I really don't have a frame of reference as I've never owned any astronomic devices before, but I have no complaints about the images that I see.Two negatives that I have is that the protective caps that go over main lenses are not tight and every time I take binoculars out of the case they come off. Makes me worried that when this happens the lenses might get scratched. Also, this item comes with only 2 year warranty compared to Nikon Action 25 year warranty!Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend these binoculars in 7x50 version to someone who doesn't want to spend a bundle to get quality optics.

4Good Binoculars
By David
I am very happy with these binoculars. I bought them primarily for stargazing and they have fit the ticket well. I have used them to make out the dimmer stars in several constellations as well as spotted a few globular clusters with them. My only complaint is that if my eyes aren't just the right distance from the lens I get "black spots" around the edges of the field of view. My other binoculars were a much cheaper department store pair and I don't remember that being a problem. Nevertheless once these are in the right position relative to my eyes they provide much clearer views than my old pair, so I am very happy with them.
