Top Notch Turns

These turns are awesome, and better than any other turns out there; yeah they're even better than the latest Technics, which are not much of an improvement over their previous versions. The reason these are better is because Stanton put a lot of research into these bad boys, whereas Technics have taken for granted their status. Now they're paying for it.The high torque adds a real quality feel as you manipulate your records, and I do guess that these will last for a while, unlike many old Technics which you have to push in order to not get that lagging sound. There are also knobs on these turns to adjust the brake and start speeds, just in case you want that lag sound. The platter is very stable, and the entire unit is heavy, which is a positive thing when talking about quality turns (stability). If you like to scratch, these bad boys will not let you skip note, assuming the hole for the spindle is not too large (just put some tape in there to get a tight fit). I would say that these are top notch, but don't pay $499. I paid like $400 or $420, so look around and buy from a reputable company. A+ all the way.

1. The playback options are endless!It can play everything from 16rpm to 80rpm +. This means I can play my "Library of Congress" records, as well as my "Diamond Discs," with the proper stylus and cartridge configuration... no problem! I can also transcribe all of my old acoustic Victors and Columbias at their proper speeds.2. I can use any stylus I wish!I am currently using two different stereo carts: an ELAC STS-444, and a 1983 Pickering TLE. I am also using a Sure M78S for my mono 78rpm needs. The great thing about the M78S cart is... I can swith out the N78S stylus for the N25C stylus when playing my mono 45rpm records! (Also, there is a variety of styli available for 78rpm groove width to fit this cartridge.)3. It just plain works! Remember the term "workhorse of the industry?" This table is one of those "workhorses!"If you want a turntable that can do anything, this is the one for you! It's not a Rondine, so don't expect it to play your 14" Pathe discs or your 16" radio trascription discs, but... it'll do just about anything else! I absolutely love mine, and if you're lucky enough to find one... you'll love it as well!

While the Stanton ST-150 with the S-shaped arm is a popular DJ turntable and can really take a beating it is also suitable for high quality home Hi-Fi use. It has an extremely heavy aluminum base (~40 lbs) and the torque it puts out with the oversized "motor" is truly insane! The platter floats above an induced magnetic field and has a ribbon of magnets attached to the platter base that cause it to spin in a periodic magnetic field. It is a "direct drive" turntable but no rumbling "motor" is used in the traditional sense. It's just a circular series of statically anchored heavy-coiled electro-magnets in the base of the turntable that are used to induce a circling field as each of the electro-magnets in the base fire off in sequence. There is little if any rumble to speak of.As far as the built-in phono preamp and the digital output options... I would avoid using both if you want high quality sound. Buy a decent external phono preamp that supports both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges and then buy a good (but reasonable priced) cartridge like something from the Denon "DL" series. The cartridge that Stanton includes is a "fat needle" cartridge that is good for DJ use but not what you want for home listening. In a pinch, you can buy a Denon DL-110 Moving Coil cartridge for about $100 and it will sound fantastic if used with a decent external phono preamp like a Music Fidelity V-LPS.Some people have problems with 60 Hz hum when using this turntable. The hum can be almost totally eliminated by using a plug-in electrical device like the Ebtech Hum-X Voltage Hum Filter. You will also want to put some type of damping material under the four feet of this turntable. I used a stack of 4 round cork coasters on each footing. You can find round cork coasters at a hardware store for around $1 per set of four. My Stanton ST-150 didn't come with a hard shell or soft shell cover but you can find well made synthetic leather covers specifically designed for this size turntable on the web for around $30 to keep out the dust when not in use.The biggest downside of the Stanton ST-150 is the quality of the S-shaped tone-arm and the fact that it is not easily replaced. It's not a bad tone-arm, just not the best. Still, don't let the audiophile snobs scare you away from buying this fantastic unit. With careful modifications it will easily beat many of the expensive belt-driven turntables that are specifically marketed to the high-end audiophile market at very high prices. This Stanton turntable is a bona-fide bargain and it is made to last.
