This magnificent tray showcases the elegant allure of the lacquerware tradition that Thailand inherited from the Chinese. Over time, Thai artisans developed their own designs and techniques. "Kruang-Kern [lacquerware] is part of our rich culture," explains Nantana Sompamitre. "Every generation strives to preserve this ancient art form." Sompamitre carves the octagonal tray from mango wood. Painted by hand, the piece receives several coats of lacquer, which Sompamitre prepares from the Gluta usitata tree and ashes of burnt rice paddy husks.

Wow! A stunner.

This tray is now among the most beautiful things I own. The description ("Elegance Engraved") and the photograph do not convey the richness and sophistication of this work of art. The craftsmanship of the tray far exceeded what I expected. When the tray arrived, the price I had paid for it seemed a real bargain.
