Product Description

PRO-GYM weight training machines offer a great deal more actual lifting weight per station than other competitive gyms. All PRO-GYM stations are designed for the ultimate in true lifting action and weight accuracy. The heavy press stations connect directly to the weight stacks by heavy-duty coil springs to absorb vibration, eliminate breakage and reduce noise. All machines use self-locking weight selector keys. Minimum ceiling height for all units is 84". Prices shown do not include delivery and installation. Recommended room area: 12' x 15'. 4Truth be Known
By Truthseeker
These machines are definitely commercial-grade heavy-duty units. They are based on the old Universal Gym Equipment Inc. units, Gladiator and Spartacus models. Anyone who is familiar with Universal Gym can see this right off. These machines will give you a great workout, however they do not have the resistance levels that are advertised. Lets take the bench press, said to have 300 lbs of resistance. Now you also have to harken back to your middle school days in science class when mechanical advantage, pulleys, incline planes, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class levers were introduced to students. The bench press is an example of a 2nd class level, I'm not going to go into the physics behind the 2nd class level, let's just leave it that it takes less effort to lift a given amount of weight using one. The weight plates of the bench press are approximately 15.4 lbs. each, there are 23 plates, therefore 15.4 X 23 = 354.2 lbs plus the weight of the handles and selector shaft approximately 24 lbs. for a total of 378.2 lbs. Of course it does not take 378.2 lbs. of effort to lift the entire stack, remember it is a 2nd class lever. The measurements I got for calculating the resistance is 32.5" for the load lever arm and 43" for the force lever arm from the fulcrum point, when you plug those numbers into the formula for levers you get 285.8 lbs. of resistance. Not too bad, but still not the 300 lbs of resistance advertised. The shoulder press is said to have 300 lbs. of resistance, the weight plates actually weigh 8.8 lbs and there are 30 plates for a total of 264 lbs, plus the handle and selector shaft, remember this is also a 2nd class lever so you would need more than 300 lbs. of weight to have 300 lbs. of resistance. The leg press indicates that it has 835 lbs. of resistance, the plates actually weight 22.2 lbs. and there are 20 plates for a total of 444lbs plus the selecter shaft. Now the leg press is an example of a 1st class lever (i.e. a see-saw), so with lever arms of equal lengths from the fulcrum it would take 444 lbs. of effort to raise 444 lbs. of weight, not the 835 lbs. indicated on the weight stacks, a far cry from 835 lbs. claimed for the leg press. The last station is the combined upper/lower pulley weight stack that indicates 260 lbs. of resistance, the weight plates are the same as those for the bench press 15.4 lbs with 26 plates for a total of 400.4 lbs. For the upper pulley station, it has two fixed pulleys to redirect the direction of pull, however on the weight stack itself there is a movable pulley (the movable pulley has a mechanical advantage of 2) so disregarding the numbers on the plates and using the actual weight, if you have 400 lbs. of weight the amount of effort needed to lift the entire stack is half the weight, or 200 lbs. So this concludes my critique of this machine, how do I know, I own one and I tore mine apart when things did not look as claimed. However now that I know the truth, I am still OK with it, it is still a good machine that gives a good workout.
