Heavy Duty Cabinets, Flimsy Drawer Dividers

Over the years Akro-Mils steel storage units have been my go to choice. Their products have always gone the distance in providing me the optimum in durability and storage. At work, I still have about a dozen of the company's older storage cabinets holding down the fort. Those are all metal including the drawers. Even though I picked those up in the early 1980s, they still do an outstanding job of holding camera gear and parts. When it came time to re-organize my garage, I once again started looking at this company's products.I ordered several of these cabinets in various drawer sizes. All of the cabinets were shipped in their original packaging. Opening the boxes, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they survived the journey without getting banged up in shipping. The quality of the steel frame cabinets is still there. The coated grey finish is a nice touch. At 21 lbs these units are no lightweights. They're built to take a beating. The cabinets stack well and are slotted for wall mounting.Like everything else in life, the days of all steel products have come to an end. Polystyrene is found in everything. That includes the drawers for this particular model. The drawers are fitted with a clear window and are slotted for multiple dividers. The built in label holder is a nice touch. The rear stop tab works as advertised. To be quite honest, I'm not a big fan of the drawers. Its a no brainer to figure out that the cabinets will outlast the drawers.The real weakness to this line up of products is the drawer dividers. Some fit, most don't. There's a small arched gap on almost all of the dividers which allows parts to mix into the other compartments. My quick fix for the gap problem is Gorilla tape. On more then one occasion these flimsy dividers have popped out of their slots and mixed parts. Rest assured these dividers are going away very soon.The manufacturer tags on a one year limited warranty from the date of purchase. All parts are made in the USA. Make no mistake, these steel cabinets will last forever. The jury is out on the polystyrene drawers. The real flaws on this product are the flimsy drawer dividers and the sticker price. This storage alternative is way overpriced for what it doesn't provide.

I've used Akro-Mils "Steel Storage Cabinets" (frames are steel, drawers are plastic) for decades because the tough plastic drawers were deep and came in multiple sizes, and the cabinets were pretty solidly made. In the current version, drawers come in a few colors and have a transparent panel. Unfortunately, compared to my old Akro-Mils cabinets, the new ones are more cheaply made in every respect. The result, I suppose, of an absence of competition.

solid and functional

I bought this to store all of the different bits, screws, and parts that I have. I hate trying to find what to do with the ceiling fan balancing kit, or the 2 specialty bits I bought for something. This is perfect for that. The drawers are deep and easily separated at many depths for small or large amounts of stuff, which to me is the real value. I thought I might need 2 but so far it is more than big enough. one drawer can maintain 3 or 4 groups of items easily. The cabinet is solid (the first one I got was dented and Amazon quickly swapped it). It is not cheap, but if you want the right tool for the job vs. some flimsy one, this is it. Though the drawers are plastic, they are solid, and the metal frame of the cabinet is solid support.
