5Industrial Quality at a reasonable price
By Todd R. Solomon
If you have the opportunity to step up to a 12" jointer, by all means do it- This thing has enabled me to surface some beatiful wide boards that otherwise would've been ripped into narrow strips, ruining their beautiful bookmatching potential. I've had it for a year now, and continue to be impressed. This is part of Grizzly's higher-end line of "Ultimate Jointers," and appears to be 90% the same machine as the General International, Bridgewood, Extrema, and some other 12" models. You can get it for substantially less than the General, and somewhat less than the others. They all have slightly different pros and cons. The Grizzly has the highest cutterhead speed at 5900 RPM, but doesn't have the Baldor motor or the 4-knife cutterhead that the Bridgewood has (my other choice, but the wait list was too long for me and shipping was astronomical). They all have the same frame and high quality table adjusting mechanism.Grizzly delivered it in a bullet-proof crate, and it came less than a week after order, delivered by Fed Ex Freight (very polite, helpful driver).General fit and finish is very good. Nice heavy duty controls. The 80" total length tables are flawless, with a near-mirror finish. I could not get a .001" shim under my straight edge over each 39" table- dead flat. They were also adjusted perfectly parallel from the factory- and I mean perfect. Again, less than .001" over my 6' straight edge. The table height mechanism adjusts each table with a large diameter wheel that is easily and precisely moved. Like all Asian castings, time will tell if they will warp, but initial quality is A1.The fence is fairly average, but adequate. It is bowed by about .015", but has no twist. Grizzly's customer service proved worthless on remedying this. I sent it in to them, and their tech claimed it was perfectly flat. Sure enough, I got it back, and verified on a granite surface plate that it was .015" out. In the end, it doesn't affect squareness of cut because it has no twist, so it's not a biggie. I don't like the sharp edge that slides on the outfeed table when it is adjusted (a problem many jointers have). I'll fix that with a block of UHMW or something similar. The knives are all within about .001", according to the dial indicator. It is very smooth and quiet in operation. The finish is impressive, glass smooth with ripples barely noticeable- as good as or better than my previous Mini Max jointer/planer.One motivator for this machine is that Byrd makes a helical cutterhead for it for $795, and I will likely upgrade to it in the near future. This is one reason why I wasn't concerned with the 3-knife cutterhead, where the Bridgewood has 4. I have a Byrd cutterhead on order in my new 22" Oliver planer. If it proves to be everything I anticipate, then I'll also get a Byrd for this jointer.I really, really like this machine. Aside from the fence (which should be easily remedied), I am completely satisfied and grinning.Grizzly is hit-and-miss on woodworking tools. This is a home-run winner.

5If quality is your first thought this is it
By JV cab
I love this machine!Delivery is some what of a challenge unless you own a fork lift.My shop is behind my home and 200 feet from the road. I found out that you must make arrangements to get it from the street to your shop, well at 1200+lbs. that turned out to be a challenge.I was able to borrow a box truck with a 3K lift on the back and pick it up at the terminal. With the help of a friend, a pallet jack, and a 1200lb engine hoist I made it to the shop. It was all worth it what a machine!! The tables are dead flat with an almost mirror finish. I have had a six inch Delta Joiner for years and it did a good job but there is no comparison to the this Grizzly machine. Moving to the 12 inch was worth it. I almost went with a 8 inch but after having to cut expensive wood down to 6 inches and re glue I decided not to settle for less than the 12 inch. Most joiners I researched larger, than 12 inch required, 3 phase power which is not a option in my area. . I checked the knives and out feed table they were dead on. installing the fence (heavy) and control box were straight forward. The best surprise was turning it on for the first time, so smooth, no vibration, NONE, and for a machine this size it is quiet. Even though it only has a three knife head it cuts smooth no ripples (5900 RPM makes a difference). Update, While cleaning the cutter head, trying to get the last bit of grease I discovered that the cutter head has 4 knives NOT three. Great surprise!
