4Great for large items

Works great for large items, but not so well for everyday drilling operations. The chuck cannot be lowered close to the table to drill small items.

4radial drill press.

After much digging for people with experience with this drill press i finally bought one. It is very heavy, so it must be mounted to a secure base. mine is a 30" tall frame that is bolted to the floor. It has a nice range of speeds, and a large 5/8" chuck capacity. My favorite part about this machine is the throat depth. in my line of work versatility is key. i need to be able to drill holes in large pieces without tying up our mill just to drill a good hole. The one downside i agree with is that you cannot get the drill all the way down to the stock table. It appears to be designed to add a XY table to the base to achieve this. My fix for that was to build a 6" tall plywood box that bolts into the T-slot base, with a drop in top piece for drilling into. this makes it able to use on a much wider variety of projects. my table is 24"x36" on the top surface so i can easily sit most things on it for drilling. and i just pop out the drop in surface and replace it when it becomes filled with too many holes. In conclusion i am a big fan of this versatile design... its also the only adjustable throat drill under $1,000 so that doesn't hurt either.
