4Not really what it's promoted as, but that's not why I bought it

Marshall's advertising for this pedal promotes it as a metal pedal, but that's really not where it's strength lies. It is capable of that scooped-mid Metallica style crunch, but it is so much more versatile than that. There are two modes: overdrive and distortion. The overdrive mode is where this pedal really shines. Without using the contour knob, the gain knob provides for an excellent early Eric Clapton "Bluesbreaker" style tone on low settings to a Appetite for Destruction style tone on the high gain settings. With the gain turned all the way up and with some tweaking of the contour and frequency knobs you can get that scooped mid metal tone, which I personally have little need for and which, honestly, I think is better done by many other OD pedals.I am more of a country/blues/rockabilly/classic rock style player, and the overdrive on this thing suits most of my needs perfectly. The distortion mode is a major letdown though. It is voiced with entirely too much low end, and you'll have to do some major fiddling with the eq knobs to even get a sound that is halfway passable. Not really worth the effort. Without this issue this pedal would be a 5 star piece of equipment. But as I said before the overdrive mode is phenomenal for a pedal in this price range and definitely deserves the Marshall name.
